1492
(Tongue half-firmly in cheek)
Sometimes, reading this board and others, it reminds me of how we sit on the Rez and watch the world, and wonder how folks make it across that big ocean in 1492 without killing each other. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/frown.gif

Hey there RS;
They made it to these shores without killing eachother because they had a LOT more in common than a hobby .

United we sail, divided we sink!
IMHO, it's called a community...as Mark said...that's a group with a common goal and/or ideal.

All the ice cream you can eat and movies every night on the fantail kept the moral up.

One reason some of "my people" made it here in one piece is that if they did not, they had the inquisition waiting for them back in good ol' Spain. 1492 was not a good year for us and that was plenty of motivation to behave nicely.
The results of our trip did leave something to be desired. Apologies extended!

RS, ahhh, some of them probably did... http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/frown.gif

I'll bet they didn't talk about religion!
As Jed pointed out, at that time saying something the church didn't like could get you in big trouble, maybe killed!

Jed
Help me out here. What is it exactly that you are apologizing for?
-
anglerdave,
Disco first, then rap music.

Jed, that was your ancestors??? You should be ashamed. Mine were Lithanian immigrants that didn't come over until the early 1900s, escaping the cossocks. The were hard working, god fearing people, and I don't think they took land from anyone.
-
no, a robe! the czar was making them wear really tacky robes, and their fashion sense just couldn't take it!!! http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
you're right--i was trying to say i just don't do the collective guilt thing...
-
So Jed it was your ancestors that did all that? Shame on you. 'A plague on both your houses.'
My dad immigrated to this country in 1925. By the time he got here things were pretty much screwed up. That I attribute to my mother's side of the family who came here during the war for independence(on the wrong side) and stayed afterward. But they never left PA as far as I can tell.
I think Roger has it right. We need to apologize for disco and rap music and nothing else.
-
adave;
I think there are a lot more things to apologize for:
Backstreet boys
Reality TV
MTV
the 80s in general
and probably many more things that I am forgetting. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif

Roger & Don,
I agree completely!.....disco=YUCK!
Let's add:
"Doing" lunch......no thanks, I'll just eat mine!

No "collective guilt trip" intended! Just an observation "from the other side" so to speak. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
Please, guys, remember, this is all tongue in cheek! I don't expect anybody to feel guilty about ANYTHING!
Except maybe disco and rap...and that whole grunge thing kinda sucked, too. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

I dunno, I'm getting sorta tired of all the reality shows too. And another thing, I get upset when somebody walks their dog in the park and conviently seems to have forgotten a bag to pick up said dog's leavings.
But, the sun is shining today (doesn't it always shine in AZ?) so I guess I really don't have any valid complaints afterall.

Dave Micus is Boston's King of Bling. For that he should apologize.
-
Don't worry, I don't really feel guilty, just noting that many Jews left Spain during that time because they were forced to or else.
My direct family came over in the early 1900's, but my "people" were displaced for centuries.
As for Disco, I have never had any part of that, except for one song by Tavares in the 1970's "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" which was quite popular when my wife and I first met and we both remember that song for reasons other than the song itself.
Now "Indy" music is another story. That is new stuff, some of which is quite good. Even an old timer like me can appreciate it.

come on, jed, stop denying your disco roots....

Dave and Dude,
That movie Saturday Night Fever was filmed where I grew up. Many of the shots were on streets that I knew well. The restaurant they were eating at used to be a flourist. It was on 94th street where 5th avenue met 4th avenue. The liquor store was Harbour Liquors about 1 block away from the restaurant. That is about as close as I come to Disco (previous exception noted). I had moved out of that area about 5 years before the film.
I grew up on Motown and Atlantic songs, with some jazz thrown in to the mix.
Marvin Gaye, Smokey, Gladys Night and the Pips, the Marvelettes, Otis etc.
Otis was sittin on the dock of the bay watchin' the tide roll in, waiting for the outgoing tide to do some good striper fishin'. He just didn't say that because he did not want to loose his support from PETA.

C'mon, Jed...I seem to remember you wearing platform wading boots....
-
Yeah Dave, give it all away. You must admit, it did not compare to your satin shirt with the ruffeled collar, or that polyester leasure suit you wore to Josko's for dinner. No wonder Josko's son would not sit at the dinner table with you. And then after that at the motel... I won't go into that because I promised you that I would not tell anyone anything for at least a year, and longer if you gave me another payment to keep my mouth closed.
jed

jed, are you making fun of my leisure suit? i thought it was dashing!
and i thought you agreed not to release the motel tapes until a year after my death! and if you refer to me as 'deep throat' i'll sue!!

You guys make me glad to be indigenous. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

While Jed's forebears were forced out of Spain, not the first European expulsion of Jews, mine were forced from the Pale of
Settlement about four centuries later. We were apparently less quick on the uptake, believing that someday we would be welcome.
As for the question of Europeans settling the new world and displacing the local indigenous peoples, I refuse to feel any guilt.
History is full of accounts of a more technologically advanced civilization displacing a less advanced. The bronze and iron age societies in Europe and the Med Rim displaced stone age peoples. Cro Magnon displaced Neaderthals. When a more advanced culture meets a less advanced, they fornicate, fight, and the less advanced is absorbed or displaced. Always!
The conclusion was foregone from the voyages of the Vikings and the other early navigators.
While it is popular and makes us feel good to feast upon the myth of the noble savage, to equate primitive inhabitants as good vs more advance evil, the same people that blame America for the WTC attacks are first to suggest that land be returned to tribal groups that no longer occupy that land.
The U.S. has an abominable history of breaking treaties made with Native Americans. So do all modern nations with their once more primitive citizens. But however sad that history, we can only live in the present if we want to succeed. Native Americans can enjoy the protection of treaty reservations with more or less sucess or can compete as equals in the melting pot.
I'd rather see them compete while maintaing tribal and historical associations and traditions when possible. I've talked to too many who exist only on their reservations, mourning lost culture and lost land. It is as sad as those Jews who brought the Pale and the stetl to America as protection from change.
Only when we are challenged do we learn and grow.

indigent? roger, we'll lend you some cash!
-
Roger
It's okay if you leave the rez. We won't tell anybody.
-
Roger, do you get that from eating bad food? And is the condition a precursor to ulcers? Maybe if you took some Tums, your indigenous (or whatever) would go away.
Hmmmmmmmm???

Indigenous
1 : having originated in and being produced, growing, or living naturally in a particular region or environment
2 : being inborn or innate
I'd reckon most of us are indigenous.....as much as humans can be. As a wise ole man told me once..."I'm a native north american, I was born here".
Now if you mean North American Aboriginal, I'd suspect some of us are that also.
