ontario steelheader,
Any dropper will do, larvae or otherwise. There's no restriction on hook style.

6 spots left. I would like to see this one fill up. Any takers??
-
Received flies from Matt (stonefly71) on saturday. Nice looking cream dry and blue bead dropper. Sign-ups close tomorrow.

Hi all,
Just a FYI, I decided to change my dry to a Goddard caddis. I like the Goddard as a dry for the dropper system since it floats so well. The beadhead will remain the same. I whipped out a couple of Goddard tonight and most came out OK. Like Tom Anderson said on Beavis and Butthead, "It's not what ya' cut, it's what ya don't cut..."

Lonnie,
No problem on the switch. How do you trim your Goddard caddis? I am looking for a good pair of scissors to do this.
Thanks
-
Me Too! :-)
As I found out last night, you really need very sharp and very fine scissors to make them look really good. The ones I was using last night weren't cutting it (pun intended). I'm going to try and pick up a good pair of Dr. Slicks sometime this week.
The other 1/2 of the equation is good spinning hair. I'm using antelope for these. It's very compressible and very pliable. The downside is it's pretty brittle. On the Goddard it dosen't really matter since you trim it so close. It's also super important that you pack it really tight towards the hook shank. It helps give it the "right" look.
I'm also debating the worth of time/effort of putting on the antenna on these. I generally cut them off before I tie them on anyway. The look better but unless you are fishing the long horned caddis (Leptoceridae) hatch I don't think they make much of a difference in how they catch fish. They also makes it really difficult to get the hackle to look right and to get a good head wrapped.

I find a double edged razor blade to be very good for most of trimming on a Goddard Caddis. Antelope hair is a smart choice.
-
I will tie a deer hair dry with a midge pupae. It has worked great for me on bluegills and bass and crappie.
-
I would like to join in on the swap if there is room. I'll tie a Stimulator and a Bead-Headed Prince. Since this is what I caught my first fish on fly fishing this past fall.

Gardenfish and pheasanttail65 are now in the swap. I was going to close sign-ups today, but I will leave it open to see if we can fill it up.

Hey Lonnie,
You say that antelope hair is brittle. Ever try soaking it in water first? That would soften it up. I haven't used the stuff myself, only deer and elk hair. If it were me I would bag the antennae, they are just for show any way.

We've got 9, any more takers???

Hi All,
I've been AWOL from the forum lately and just wanted to give you guys an update. I've chugging along about 1/2-2/3 of the way through. I'm in 2 other swaps on others sites so I've really be behind the 8 ball. I'm on target be done on time.
As I said when I signed up, I love nightime caddis fishing in the summer. If you've never seen a western caddis "hatch" on a late summer evening, there's almost nothing like it. Anyway, I'm tying two patterns that I've used with great success here in Utah. They are only the tip of the iceburg when it comes to my caddis collection....
I'm tying the goddard and a 2000 version of the leadwing coachman. The goddard's aren't the best I've ever seen/tied, but they are my favorite caddis dry so I figured I better learn how to tie them. They're fun but take a lot of time (and are the hold up...) Here's the receipe(s)...
Goddard
Spun Antelope Hair Trimed to "tent" shape
Hackle: Brown
Thread: Back
Lonnie's BH Leadwing
Hook: Mustad C49's #16
Underbody: Orvis Antron dubbing "Peacock" (not sure if they make this color anymore. Any dark green dubbing will work)
Overbody: Peacock Herl
Wing: White EP fibers
Hackle: Brown
Bead: Gold
The major changes on this last one is the curved hook (which makes it look like a ovipositing female) The EP fiber wing (which hold little bubbles) and the bead, which helps suspend the fly and gives it a good look. Have fun with these !

I am all done and flies will be mailed out 1.13.2005. They are toe tagged and SASE back to me in the same box that I am using to mail my flies if ok. Thank for hosting and can't wait to see all the patterns.

Thanks for the update, foxxtrot. I'll be on the lookout for those.

Just a reminder, Jan 31 is coming up fast! I have 5 sets in house, I am looking for 7 more. Happy Tying.
