A year ago I was out fishing on an area river and watched another fly angler who was clearly also new to fly fishing, but who was having a harder time than I was. I had already been fishing for a while and was starting to move back towards my car and had to pass this gentleman on the way. He stoped casting and asked me how my day had been. I responded and we struck up a short conversation. He mentioned that he just didn't seem to have what the fish wanted and I asked him what type of flies he had been using. He pointed to a fly patch on his vest that was festooned with a wide variety of flies, but I quickly noticed only one of each type and only one of each size. He commented that these were the flies selected for him by the shop he had purchased his equipment at and they were all he had. Knowing that the fish were going for Griffiths Gnats I asked him if he had any while showing him the one I had tied on. His response was no, but he'd be sure to get some the next time he was at the shop.
As someone who had begun tying a few months prior I had a fly box full of flies. I pulled out one of my boxes and asked him if he had a small box or something to hold flies in other than the patch on his vest. He proceeded to pull out a small compartment style box, and stared in amazement as I emptied my box of griffith's gnats. He immediately started to protest, but I told him it wasn't an issue since I tyed. He thanked me profusely and I told him the way he could really thank me was to pass on a few of the flies to someone else who needed them someday.
All this is to say that Tim's act of generosity has encouraged me to be generous to other fly fishers and I encourage others to do the same.
