I just don't know what this world is coming too.
Maybe it's time to slow down the stroke and enjoy the ride. :)
Ohhhh buddy!!!
Dang. Now I might have to buy something at Cabela's.
This is killing me! I clicked on the link and found a whole world of fiberglass rods that I didn't know existed. I don't know if my wallet can handle this.
Doug
I live close to a Cabelas and stay out of there in support of a local shop. However the glass rod offerings are a very strong pull to get me in there!
If the Cabela's glass isn't a strong enough pull, Cortland is bringing back the Diamondback glass rods!
It would be nice if Cabela's would offer the C.G.R. blanks.
scott is bringing them back also?

Whoa Doggies! This is not good .... Nope, not good at all!!
so the rod makers have found another marketing ploy to sell more over priced stuff. sad day, sad day indeed.
When we were in Frisco Colorado this summer we had to stop at WalMart, of all places, and I naturally wandered through the fishing section. Low and behold they had an Eagle Claw yellow fiberglass 7' 5wt fly rod there for only $19.95. What a bargin, I should have bought 2. I haven't had the chance to try it on trout yet, maybe some time in October, but it has been fun on local bluegills and bass and catfish so far. Not too difficult to cast, but much different than any other fly rod I have. Maybe there is something to this fiberglass stuff.

Not if you are employed by the manufacturer, a fly shop or anywhere where tackle is sold. Even if "overpriced stuff" isn't everyone's cup of tea, without it and the people who buy it, all of those beloved fly shops would close along with more than a few manufacturers.
I don't think that Cabela's selling glass rods is that unusual
As I remember they were one of the last or maybe even toward the end, the exclusive sellers of those short FenGlass rods
What was that, maybe 8-10 years ago ?
They'll list those new CGR rods for a couple of years and when they don't sell a ton of them, then close them out at half price..
Wake me when the time comes
Wakey wakey dudley:

It's not half price but I think that's because they did sell a ton of them. I've got the 7' 4-5 wt and it's the sweetest rod I've ever cast. The only down side is the real seat, uplocking would have been nice.
I have both, the Cabela's Glass AND I just won a Scott F2...Life is gooooood.
I just won a Grizzly on Ebay and awaiting it as we speak. For the longest time have been playing with fiberglass and love some of the Fenwick as well as other rods. Haven't picked up any of the newer ones preferring to find those produced at the peak of the rod makers fiberglass and ferrule technology years back.
The older fiberglass is sweet. Like holding history. I bought a nice Browning off ebay, but the cork split right in the middle. Have no idea how to get it off unless I strip all the guides as the seat isn't going anywhere. Might have to look into that some day. This new glass is like a feather and I like that a lot.
I have one fiberglass rod...an old Berkeley Buchaneer that I bought at an auction. As near as I can figure it is from about 1970. I stripped off the guides, grip, reel seat (I had to cut that off with a tin snips, it was cheap aluminum), and stripped off the old yellow paint. The blank is a rich reddish brown. What I have now is a world nicer than what I bought, and a real challenge to cast. A challenge in that it cast slow and easy, and if you forget and try to force it, it punishes you. If you let it do the work, it rewards you with a nice, nearly lazy presentation. All told, it cost me $38, and it is one of my favorite rods. I'd love to know what a nice fiberglass rod is like. :)
The Cabelas glass rods are very nice. I've held them contemplating laying down the cash a number of times. And for the record, Cabelas already does carry both Winston & Sage. :)
I have two of the Cabelas Custom Glass Rods, a 5'6" 3wt and a 6'6" 4wt. The first thing that impressed me about these rods was the rod finish and the quality of the cork, guides and wrapping. For the price I paid I was not expecting the quality; pleasant surprise. The grips and reel seats are good quality cork with sliding band rings which helps to keep the rod weight down
I fish a lot of bamboo so the slower action of the glass rods was something I was already familiar with. That being said, the 3wt requires a very soft hand as it's easy to overpower the rod and get way too much tip bounce. The 4wt is much better to cast and is not as prone to the bounce I've experienced with the 3wt. Both rods cast better with a DT line rather than a WF, also smaller reels balance the rods out better.
Both of my rods are the 50th anniversary edition rods that include a very nice Cordura rod case. The cases are brown with yellow embroidery which includes the 50th anniversary logo.
I bought the 5/6 when it came out and found it a bit faster than much of the old glass I have cast but very enjoyable. Only nit was the tight tolerance on the reel seat which meant most of the reels that I could find that fit it well had machined reel feet. I have used 4, 5, and 6wt lines on it. At the distances that I use it, I find no significant differences between WF and DT lines given that I dont get more than 35ft of line outside the tip.
When I saw the sale I bought the 7/8 weight to play around with for fishing bass bugs. The tip seems to bounce a bit more than the 5/6 and the action overall seems a tad slower. I have only had it a couple of weeks and only lawn cast it but it handles 6, 7, and 8wt WF lines well. I will probably use all three at some point while fishing depending on the application. It has an excellent aluminum reel and the rod would work well for salty applications.
