Streamside snacks
Hi folks, RW here,
This was done about two or three years ago..time to do it again with all the new members we have. What is your favorite snack to take along for a day astream?
Before my cholesterol problem it was always hardboiled eggs for me. Luv em..but they don't luv me. Now it's a small pocket size bag of trail-mix (my own recipe) or a couple granola bars... power bars, etc. Plenty of cold coke back at the truck.
I remember when the former thread went up there were gourmet lunches streamside, with wine and a good macanudo cigar for an afternoon break. Also some excellent ideas for snacks came of it.
Before I quit drinking I used to stash a can of beer every hundred yards or so, in the cold water in obscure places as I fished upstream ( I wore a vest back then). As I fished back downstream I'd have my beer breaks as the day wound down. Usually had something good back in the truck in a cooler when the fishing was done.
So how bout some of you. Snacks? No snacks? Hearty lunch? Midday break to a diner? What's your favorite?
With Thanksgiving almost on us it's time to think about food. Should make for a good thread.
Later, RW

Around 45 years ago my grandfather gave me some excellent advise.
Alway carry some hard candy in your vest pocket.
One little piece of candy will quench both thirst and hunger when you just can't bring yourself to reel-up and go home.
-
Steak Tataki (steak marinated in soy sauce, ginger and onion) with sushi rolls (home made). I don't do this every trip but once in a while its alot of fun!

I guess I am no fun in this thread. When I go fishing, I fish, not eat. That comes later. On a long hunt, I'll take a couple candy bars (choc w/almonds or something like that).
-
I am confuuuusssed don't you guys just look in the PIC-A-NIC basket that the wife packed and select some goody while she rows the boat down to the next spot??? LOL

If I am going to be out for a long day I may take a few granola bars and a soda or water...Like that cold beer in the stream idea though..hummm. I also occasionaly take a fine cigar and may take a break for a few moments...smell the roses sort of break..

I normally will take a sandwich, usually pb&j, a candy bar(Snikers) and a bottle of water. All tucked in the back pouch of my vest. Oh and a flask with a bit of single malt.
If I am fishing from the yak, then I'll pack a small cooler and take some summer sausage and cheese, a few crakers and some cold beer along with the water.
-
If I take anything at all it would be some saltine crackers with peanut butter that I make up beforehand and put in a zip lock bag plus a bottle of water. Usually do not stop to snack but will snack as I walk through the woods to the next spot on the river or while floating in my Hobie Cat from hole to hole. I enjoy the fishing so much that I do not want to stop and eat so I eat and fish/walk at the same time.
-
If I am going to be out all day I take
an apple ,a piece of cheese, and a piece of ring balonga. Always have my pipe or a good cigar.

Water only... A few good cigars... If you ever had a kidney stone you know that water is important. Stones can form in minutes if you get dehydrated and believe me, if you haven't had em, you don't want em and if you've had em once you sure as heck don't want em again!!!!
-
I think we might need to rephrase the question as to what Scotch and cigar you take.
Some single malt - Glenmorangie and a Jose Padron Anniversary 1964.
I would like to fish with this group!

paff

While fishing the only thing I carry is 3 oz of Knob Creek or Woodford Reserve, (my traveling hooch) or a good Laphroaig or Pappy Van Winkle; and to munch on while trying to figure out what fly to try next: a Padron, Ashton or Partagas.
Back at the car are Lance crackers and beer...
...just in case.

Having been a "dry" guy for years and years now I guess my beverage of choice has gotten narrowed down to ice cold Diet Pepsi and the same in a Diet Mt. Dew. Snax are anything that can be gobbled between fish. No cigar for me either but when the first fish is to hand the wrapper comes off of the Panda Black Licorice bar. That's my celebratory libation. Food can wait while the fishing is happening. Cheers and Fish on!

I fish, therefore I swam.
-
I don't like to stop fishing to eat but occasionally my feet will get too cold to stand in the water anymore and I get out and snack on some dried pineapple. I usually also take some jalepeno hot salsa sunflower seeds to eat on while I fish.

Grab and go! I don't get out as much as I'd like to and am rather excitable when I do find that kind of time, so when I have time to fish long enough to need a snack, I take whatever's quick. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is about as involved as I can handle, but my staples are granola bars, apples, and graham crackers.
Sometimes I forget and find myself salivating and wondering if the powerbait someone before me left behind is edible. I haven't given in to that yet though.
-
2 or 3 newfie steak sandwiches(balonga)smothered in mustard.
pack of granola bars
3 or 4 gatorade or flavoured water, packin' through the brush is not easy work http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
-
The last couple of times that I've gone for the day I have taken a couple of grilled pork chops and a banana along with a coke and some bottled water. I usually have some jerky, trail mix, and maybe a power bar or two in my duffle bag.

I'm usualy not far from camp or Jeep so haven't given it much thought. But, next year I plan to do a lot more traveling than I did this year. More day trips, etc. and will have to give "Snacks" more thought. Also on a reduced sugar and salt diet so maybe some ArchWay sugarless cookies and bottled water.
-
I always take water wtih me and a little something to snack on the water like peanutbutter crackers and good stoogie if the fishing slows or I need a break.
Back at the car is an assortment of goodies like sandwiches, chips, cookies or fruit and a beer or three. And if it's a longer trip I love a good single malt like The Macallan.
Bamboozle and I would be in good company together.

cctyer;
I think you could fish with any of us!!
-
Thanks Jack! I hope I get the chance to do just that with as many of you as possible. I feel like I know so many of you already that putting a face to the names and footsteps in the silt of a great river or stream together would make it complete.
-
Venison or Beef Jerky, Pepper Sticks, Summer Sausage with crackers, cheese and apples, Snickers Marathon Bars, or Bologna Sandwiches with mayo and potato chips on it (yes, I said on it).
Hmmm, I'm getting hungry. Better go grab my flyrod.

Well let me tell ya, I enjoy taking the woman along. She might only catch one fish but I assure you it will be the biggest. Her lunches and snacks are second to none. Dehydrated pineapple, saut?ed chicken cutlets with a huge flask of wine and fresh Italian bread. For a snack she will throw in some pepperoni, cheese and crackers. The best part is she backpacks it in and leaves the ff equipment for me to handle.
Thats my girl

Man with the provisions some of you tote along I hope to run into some of you on the water when I'm hungry.

Hey there RW,
Cold thin sliced steak or pork roast on "real" buttered rye bread ( I prefer the lighter Polish rye form a Polish deli). The butter adds a whole lot to the flavor of this sammich.
I too once stashed beers every few yards or so and when I started to forget where I stashed em, I gave up that practice. Now it's usually a flask of something good in my pocket.

If I'm fishing by myself or with the guys, it's buffalo jerky, extra sharp cheddar cheese with apple slices and a few of VEE's orange cookies.
If I'm fishing with VEE and I can get her to take a lunch break, there's always more really good food than I can eat. VEE is a contingency packer when it comes to stream side lunches. Never know when we might run into a hungry fly fisher or twenty that we can share with.

I must be the only one who figures on getting something on the road somewhere. I end up with a bag of chips from a gas station on the way home as the only thing I eat all day.

When I'm on the water wade-fishing, I don't worry a lot about eating--especially if the fish are very active. I carry a couple of bottles of water in the back of my vest along with granola bars and the trail mix that is almost all nuts and dried tropical fruits. Often I'll fish all day without touching the food though.
If I'm drifting, I carry a full lunch--roast beef or turkey sandwiches, cold drinks, smoked oysters, crackers, chocolate bars, etc, as I have a cooler in my boat.
After fishing I break out the scotch. Generally always take a flask of Glenlivet, Glenfidditch, or one of them other Glen's scotch. I'm also fond of ales of all sorts. I don't as a rule drink any liquor while fishing--especially if I'm rowing.
I'm also partial to heavier after-fishing meals. Mexican if I'm going out to dinner, or Smoked Salmon Fettucine Alfredo with a parmesan garlic bread and a good wine if I'm cooking in and have the facilities.
It's all good when you're on the stream however.

Thermos of Timmys Coffee . and a 24 pack of timbits. If your Canadian you'll understand If Your not you won't.

I'm one of those guys who takes food but seldom stops fishing long enough to eat it. Favorite snacks are jerky, Slim Jims, & cheese (the sharper, the better!).
Marco......You hit me where it hurts buddy...I LOVE rye bread...last year, we were at a catered affair & they served "stacked" beef tenderloin on mini rye buns with a horseradish sauce & cucumber....WOW!

Gnu Bee.....Not Canadian but I've had enough of Tim Horton's to know what you are talkin about. RS2 would love to meet you and your flask of single malt along the stream some day....lol

I starve while fishing then head for a place to snack, McD, BK, KFC not being shunned.
A few years back, I decided to make some good shore meals. 'Bought a little one burner Coleman stove and a tiny gas broiler that does an excellent job on steaks, chops, and chicken. A little Italian espresso maker rounds out my equipment.
Trouble is I've never used these things except at home but vow to make the best shore lunch going this year. This is a "New Years Resolution".
I'm supposed to drink 8 glasses of water per day but the only time I reach that goal is when I loose my ballance and take a bath in it. Bad enough that ...let alone have to drink it from a glass. I carry a supply but don't drink much of it.
Cigars?..oh how I miss THEM! I'm smoke free now, after 5/day, about 6 bowls of good old Kentucky pipe tobacco and a half pack of Luckies. Dang...the days of smoking pleasure came to and end too early!
Here's my menu for my first shore lunch
Broiled Porterhouse Steak
Salt Potatoes
Greek Village Salad
Hard Rolls
Coffee
CIGAR?

Oh, my. A silver flask of good scotch, snack usually a ham and cheese sandwich or two...I like a Punch Bolo smoke when the mood hits on the water, though I don't smoke cigarettes anymore I still enjoy an occasional stogie.

Sometimes I toss a can of Chef Boyardee under front of the (south-facing) windshield to warm up. Ravioli can make a nice break for lunch. Sometimes a peanut butter sandwish and apples do the job. Usually water is the drink of the day. I don't usually take a cooler, but I suppose that I could enhance my options if I started taking one. A couple of packs of peanuts is a good addition to carry, if nothing else.
-
I can get a lot of miles out of an apple, a granola bar and a 20oz plastic jug of water.
Back at the pick-up truck is where all the serious goodies are kept. There's a Coleman cookstove, an ice chest where everything from bacon & eggs or some exotic dish like chile are kept; I've even been know to pan fry a trout - those 9/10" brookies are great!

I take some raisins or trail mix. Twin labs makes an exercise recovery drink. 16 oz. 400 calories, and 100 grams of complex carbohydrates. I can pour this stuff into a water bottle with water. You would be surpirsed how this can help with up and down rock hopping, mountain creek fishing.
If I am gonna be out more than a few hours I also take water.
