In a recent article by Ladyfisher http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ldy/ldy100608.php she talks about using a high backcast and there is also a picture showing her perfroming the cast. Some streams I fish have high banks on both sides where this cast would be good to know. LF or others can you please describe how to perform the cast?

Thanks for the info. This Saturday I am going to the casting ponds to practice that cast. I sure wish I asked this question a few weeks ago. I spent an entire day roll casting. Not a bad cast to know, but it would have been nice to be able to mix it up a bit.

I learned it as a matter of necessity fishing on tight mountain streams. The line would be torqued on pick up and I'd aim the rod at an overhead break in the foliage.
It is also usefull on streams with a lot of canoe and tuber traffic. If they are courteouse enough to go behind me I use a steeple cast to make sure the fly doesn't go anywhere near them.

IMHO, to make a high back cast, keep your casting elbow close to your body, so that at the end of your back cast your elbow points out about degrees from the target.

Also make sure your right foot - assuming you're right-handed - isn't too far behind your left. (If it is you'll have trouble making an abrupt stop.) You can use a closed stance: your right foot in front of your left.

Mel Krieger stated it best with what he said about starting any cast "hold the rod as if you are holding a small bird",

I assume you can throw your basic casts reasonable well in any stance
that you would be faced with at stream side. Sometimes even on rocky uneven sloped
narrow banks where this type of cast is very useful. Rip Rap ect...
You should be able to cast on one foot, you might need to.....
... anyway;
I like to start the hi back-cast with the reel on top in the inverted position. It allows me a bit more wrist control..
I lift the rod tip with a high swing up darn near vertically in front of me to a crisp stop, and then I sweep the forward cast
downward while flipping the reel back to it's normal position, at the same time bringing the rod tip right down to water level,
finishing out the cast with another crisp stop, and an ever so gentle touchdown...
Lady fishers photographs are worth one thousand words.. She sure throws a nice cast...
You can tell she is an accomplished caster, her stance is not of any concern to her
she is a natural at exacting the hi back cast.. in my view of course...

Unfortunately for many it isn't either and the frustration level makes the whole experience considerably less than it can be.
Casting should be totally automatic. Put the cast where it needs to be - regardless of position, wind, overhead trees, brush and so on.
If you can't do that, you need to work on your casting.
The only way to do that is by practice - and by practicing the right things. Once it is
"in there" it will become automatic - effective and fun!

Maybe this will help. I have taught with him. Another way to look at it or describe it is, you make a 'forward cast' up and to the back. Just imagine you are fishing to a trout that is behind you and about thirty feet in the air. :) Then after you make the cast there, quickly turn your reel back down and come forward.
So, every time I aim my line in a alternate direction from flat dead level to accomdate the circumstances at hand. I get to name it something other than. I think I get it now. Hense forth all line projection other than flat dead level shall be known as "Other thans". Sort of like, "Yanoe, you myten ought tuv flung thaaun sumares other than rount dat squirel perch". :rolleyes:

There use to be a fly fishing camp , Anglers something.. May still be there..
Anyway, the instructor would have us down in the prone position
casting while resting on our elbows..
Talk about feeling goofy, but I must admit that prone cast position helped
to get ya thinking out of the norm...
I do remember that instructor could haul with his foot!
Bob Jacklin stopped in and gave us a lesson on our last day, what a treat that was.
This was back in the early eighties..
Bob has been giving free lessons every Saturday evening during the summer
in town... Last time I saw him doing it was 2005 fyi... if your interested
One more thing , we would always start out with our imagery
rods or a cup filled with water... and then work our way to using
a real rod.
Spam & eggs for breakfast every morning to boot!
I hope the camp is still there it was quite a boot camp for the young at heart.
It is right over the line from Idaho when you cross the Continental divide
round the curve.. It was still there a couple of years ago..

When we ran our school we had you sit on the ground, as if you were in a float-tube. Helps to realize you need a tight loop on the back-cast or your line hits.

I'm so sorry ... I even waited till today (Tuesday) to ask this, because I figured I'd figure a difference in the cast since my original reading (and subsequent readings) of this article. But I still haven't. So I'll ask. What is the difference in the Steeple cast, high back cast, and a roll cast? To me, the unlearned, they look the same. Am I missing a nuance? Or more?
Hi Betty A roll cast is done with no back cast at all. You use the tension of the line on the water to load the rod and make a forward cast as J.C. did from the dock at Gates this summer. A steeple cast is merely a high back cast carried to extremes. The back cast goes as close to straight up as possible to avoid obstacles to the rear that are too high to get a back cast over. all are unfortunately more easily demonstrated than described.

to use the hi-back cast first..

Something new? Well, this isn't new but lots of times creeping around and dapping works better than roll casting or high back casting.
