flyfishmt,
Actually there are no limits, just try to use "reasonable" sized pics as the dial up user might have a hard time.
You reference the photo that is stored somewhere else on the I*Net. The following image is stored at: http://www3.sympatico.ca/chris_chin/index_files/Sunrise1024.jpg[/url:ab7d0]
'cause I use it on the page: http://www3.sympatico.ca/chris_chin/[/url:ab7d0]

Hey gentlemen!
Of course you've got to be kidding if you believe that ANTYHING from the previous posts helps or explains how to post a photo into this forum. You can't fool me. Your REAL agenda is to keep most of us from posting our " great" protographic "masterpieces".

after you have put your photos in the FREE site....
Copy paste them in a post with [img] before the addy and
[/img]
after the addy.
Okay,
I'm with Marco.
NOTHING there about 'how' to post a picture.
I have a digital camera and the pictures are in a file on my PC.
THAT is all I 'know' how to do.
How do you 'post' means to me 'how do I get that picture compressed (I think they call it that) and off of my computer and onto the internet and ultimately into a 'post'?
I tried just copy/paste, but the TIME needed was like hours.
Need to 'compress'. How do you do THAT. What's this funny bracket thingy that you need - ? WHAT is an 'addy'?
Need to start at the beginning, with the 'basics'.
Please, in english, not 'netspeak'?
Thanks,
Buddy

I'm with Buddy and Marco -- and waiting.
Patience, I'm working on a document for y'all...
Got to www.photobucket.com[/url:872ca] and sign up for an account. They have a free one and pay one. I just signed up for the free one.
They will email you a confirmation link and password.
Once you complete signing up, you can download pics for your PC into their website.
To download here, go to your Photobucket folder and select the pic you want.
Under the pic you will see some boxes and one of them have a url address in it. Double click on it to highlight it and copy it by pressing down on the right side button of your mouse.
Go to your thread here and type after it.
Click Submit Reply below and your post and with pic should come up.
I hope this helps.

Ok, So we want to post photos on FAOL.
There are s few steps to do first before we can post photos for all the world to drool over.
- the photos need be "housed" somewhere on the Internet[/*:m:307e4]
- you need to "reference" the photo so that it "appears" in the thread on FAOL.[/*:m:307e4]
First off you need to send the photo from your computer TO the internet. As said earlier a place one can use is photobucket.com ... a free site that houses images. I just opened an account, it took about 3 minutes.
You follow the instruction at PhotoBucket and upload a photo from your computer to PhotoBucket. In my example, I sent a file called fcch_ava64.jpg
Second, you need to write a posting here on FAOL and put into it the appropriate UBB code.
Ubb code is those [] characters and stuff that help us format the posting with boldface, colors etc. Further, the codes let us reference other web pages .... and ... Photos.
So, I sent a photo to photobucket and want it to appear in this post. I type into the post:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/fcch/screen3.jpg
and this picture (should) appear
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fcch_ava64.jpg
Question, how do you know what to type.
In photobucket, once the image is posted there, in your album, you'll see the URL in a window. That is the "adress" you add in between the http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...h/startIMG.jpg and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/fcch/stopIMG.jpg such as http://www3.sympatico.ca/chris_chin/index_files/104-0442_IMG.jpg[/url:307e4]
So if I add this "adress" or URL in between the http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...h/startIMG.jpg and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...h/startIMG.jpg
We (should) see:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/chris_chin/...4-0442_IMG.jpg
Hope this helps ...
(work in progress)

Photo compression ...
To keep up with the question Buddy asked. What about compression.
When I mentionned earlier to use "small" images, that was to help Dial-up users stay awake and to cut down on bandwidth use (traffic) for FAOL.
The "bigger" the image, the more time it takes to load a posting.
How does one "compress" the image. Well, you make it smaller with a imaging package. I use CorelDraw, but most imagers will do it (like ViewPrint).
Depending on the program, it might be RESIZE, RESAMPLE etc. You want to keep the image under say about 800 pixels wide ... That way, it should display properly on the web.
If you want more info, it'll be easier to explain in an e-mail.

Re; photobucket...
They allow you to resize your photo...75%..50%....or 25%....25% [at least for me ] gives the small pictures you see...50% fills the width of the page...
You don't have to type anything....They have under the picture 3 URLs so all you have to do is highlight the one you want ...Ctrl c it [copy] and then Ctrl v [paste] it in your FAOL post....The [img] url posts the actual picture and the other just posts the link...
In another thread...I think it was Norm ...posted some instructions that I thought were pretty good....I'll see if I can find them...[not that the ones above weren't]....
Here's Norm's post...hope it helps...

Posting photos on a forum or bulletin board
1.Make sure your photos reside on your hard drive in your computer.
2.Open a free account on one of the webs photo hosting sites such as Shutterfly.com, myfishingpictures.com, snapfish.com or even your ISP may have space reserved for you to post photos. Create an album for your photos.
3.Upload your photos to the album on the photo-hosting site that you have chosen. Now the photo resides on the ?NET? and has a web address that can be downloaded to forums and bulletin boards.
4.Compose your forum or bulletin board message. Now your ready to insert your photo. Open your photo-hosting site, open your album and right click on the photo you want to post. A dialog box will appear and give you info about that photo. Look for a line that has the address and left click and drag the mouse to highlight it. Now use the ctrl+c buttons on your keyboard to copy the address. Minimize this page.
5.Go back to the bulletin board message to post your photo. Now is a good time to read the following: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/ubbcode.html[/url:e1509] The instructions for the UBB code is the same for other forums and bulletin boards.
6.Scroll down the UBB instructions to ?ADDING IMAGES? and follow the directions to a tee. Remember the opening does not have a slash in the brackets, only the ending does.
7.Voila, your photo magically appears.
Good luck, it?s really easy to post photos.

THANKS to all above for the good info. Just one of the small wonders of this great web site-- that those who know how are so eager and willing to share with the rest of us!
Posting photos:
Save the image to your computer's harddisk after downloading it from your camera. Edit the photo to get it down to a smaller total pixel size--no larger than 640 by 480 or even 320 by 240 or smaller for posting on the internet or it takes too long to download--especially for those with dial-up modems.
You can do this editing on Adobe Photodeluxe, Photoshop, Olympus Comediamaster, or any of the packages that came with your digital cameras or that are available for downloading and editing your pictures/images. There are slight differences in them but all are functional and you should use whatever you feel comfortable with.
After you've edited and saved your final desired picture, download the reduced photo to one of the online photo repositories so that you get it onto the internet where it can be viewed by others.--I use personal webspace but you can also use a free service such as photobucket (there are others as well that are also free) which is located at http://img.photobucket.com[/url:0635d] . After opening an account with them and getting a password you can download and save your image on the internet where it will be assigned a URL (nothing more than the address it is located at--it's location on the internet).
After you log into photobucket (or wherever you elect to save your pictures to the internet at), browse your computer's harddrive for the image you want to download. You may have to rename it to meet the requirements of the host but if you don't it will generally truncate it to make it load. Save the image--generally as a .jpg or .gif file.
In my case let's say I want to save an image to photobucket of a bird's nest fly. I've edited it to resize it and so after browsing I'll pull up the file titled BH Bird's Nest.jpg from my picture files saved on my hard drive and load this file to photobucket. It will save as:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/WFFGUY/BHBirdsNest.jpg[/url:0635d]
To put this picture onto a bulletin board, I then cut and paste the above URL location into the image brackets. Some sites allow you to click on the insert image icon while other sites allow you to use HTML/UBB codes. If you use UBB, then you?d put the above into the [img][/img] brackets:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...HBirdsNest.jpg
The image of a Bird?s Nest Fly should then appear.
(I hope this works as I've never posted a picture to this site).

Chewy, that looks amazingly like the Juan! If you take off the glasses, tho, we can see who ya are!
flyfishmt, I don't recall ever saying the quote on your signature line, and back in 92 I doubt I ever said anything worth quoting at all. Whose words?
Glad to see all of you got the pic thing to work. For those of us with dialup, be advised that a thread full of pics is not one I for one am going to wait to load. I try to just provide a link to the pics, especially since I catch fish that are wider than the page, usually *G*
