I have a barely used Woods River bag I would sell...I'll have to search some old emails...I was advised what it would be worth....hope I can find them.
I sometimes use a Army surplus gas mask shoulder bag. It has some pockets inside large enough for fly boxes. Its big enough to haul everything I want to.
Its like this one

Anglerdave..
I been keeping my eye out for something..
a small backpack, holster bag, or something to help store a few things in..
I dont want a chest pack.. I have a vest and I would want to be able to wear in with the vest...
I say small...
only things that I would put in it would be a fly box or two (to take to bulk out of my vest now), a few extra lights (flashlight for walking and a couple extra headlamps), extra spools of line (I need them on the water, but I carry them in my vest, I know they make the spool lanyards I just dont like them), a few tools (pliers, knife, and other mis.), and then my camera (Need a place to keep it handy and fast to get to)..
I thought about get a chest pack and wearing as a fanny pack.. but I dont want it to get wet..
maybe I need a bigger vest.....LOL

I have a little green canvas bag I got at cabelas that works well. In a perfect world ti would be a mite larger but have a couple of standard fly boxes and three or four altoid boxes from the swaps, plus the tools and leader material. Goes over the shoulder and slings behind me out of the way. works well. JGW
I've been looking for the same thing. I want something to use for warmwater fishing. For a number of reasons, I don't like chest packs. The Wood River bag in a size smaller than the "trout" model would be perfect, except you can't get 'em anymore.
white43 - do you happen to know the model number of that Cabela's bag?
Hi gadabout,
I use an Orvis chest pack that I sometimes use over my shoulder and sometimes as a fanny pack and sometimes as a chest pack. It depends on what I am doing and where I am fishing. It is my warmwater fishing kit as it is too hot to wear the vest. If I am rock hopping on the river I flip it around as a fanny pack. If I am just walking a bank and can see where I am going well enough, I will turn it around to the front of me or wear it as a chest pack. However, William Joseph makes one that I believe is called a bandolier and it is really nice with built-in pockets etc. All Wm Joseph is pricey but worth the money. I know that most reputable fly shops carry the William Joseph line of vests and packs but since I don't know your location, I suggest you start an online search or check your catalogs.
Good Luck in your search.
Gerri :D
How about this?

This should fulfil your needs,
a classic purpose-biult bag from the US

I cant recall for sure, but I think I saw one in my last Filsons catalogue. It wont be cheap, but they make awesome awesome stuff. They have an online store you could check.....
This is as close as I can find in the on-line Cabelas' site: Cabela's Deluxe Gear Bag\Item:QW-318420. I was in the Owatonna Cabelas and had the one I have on special at the time, which was back a few years. Mine is a smaller verious on this bag, and this one looks much more practical than mine. Roomier. I need nothing fancy, just something to conveniently carry my stuff with a long enough strap that I can adjust it to it's over my shoulder but out of the way. I don't like fanny packs, and here where you've got to wear life vests tackle jackets are out of the question. These work quite well for what I need. Hope this helps. JGW
Well this generated more interest than I thought it would.
ducksterman - i might be interested in your Woods River bag. But have vacation coming up in a couple of weeks, so would have to wait.
Jerry, you are a genius! It just so happens I have a gasmask bag left over from my reserve days. I'll have to dig it out and give it a go.
JGW, I looked at the bag on Cabelas website and it has possibilities. I will be going bye one on my way to CO in a couple of weeks and will stop in and look at what they have.
gerri - I have an Orvis Sage Passage mini chest back that I sometimes use for fishing pond for bluegills, but find it limited to what I can carry. I'll be stopping in some fly shops in Estes Park while I'm on vacation and will check out the William Joseph bandolier.
I also have an LLBean fanny pack that we bought for short hikes while on vacation, that I thought about using for fishing. But, like Leonard don't like the thought of getting it wet. I also don't know if I'd like having to turn it around to the front everytime I want to get something out of it.
Speaking of Cabela's, I have one of these but it doesn't ride very well when slung over the shoulder. http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates ... hasJS=true
I have the Fanny/Chest pack by Orvis and I used it while guiding, but with 4 System X fly boxes and two water bottles it was killing my hips. Plus I would take it off and hang it on my shoulder.
So, I decided to buy the one that Gramps posted. I did have the WJ one years ago and I hated it, but the Orvis one is really nice and I love the heck out of it. The little pocket in the fron can come off, but I have yet to take it off. Got a nice little slot for pliers of Forceps. The largest section has a mesh pocket in it. I haul two System X, leader wallet, Indicators, etc. Then in the middle pocket I haul 6 of the small compartment boxes. In the Small pocket Flouro and Frogs Fanny. plus my Camera.
The shoulder strap is wide and padded for a lot of comfort and there is a small strap to go around your waist. Plus a Zinger pocket. The Net ring is centrally located so you can slide the sing to the front or the back and the net stays in the back with no problem. It is well worth the $49.

Angler Dave, The other nice feature is I can wade waist High and not get everything soaked like the Fanny.
Thanks for all the suggestions folks. The nice thing about he Wood River bag is that when you open the bag, all the contents are readily accessible. With many of the other bags, fanny packs, etc. that I see, you open a zipper and have to rumage around to find something. And while you're doing that, things can easily fall out.

Jeff Mancini, owner of East Coast Fisherman, Inc makes some awesome bags.
Take a look at his Small size LTC Bag. It is my Shoulder Bag on the salt water flats.

They are great bags BTW; my buddy has one and got it for considerably less at Somerset.
AnglerDave -
I can't vouch for this site but check http://www.sierraoutdoorproducts.com/products.html. They have a Wood River bag listed.
Anglerdave -
Here's another option, a bag from Clear Creek (right down there in Iowa). See it offered at Sierra Trading Post - http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/4305,75280_.html. There's also a nice photo and description at http://www.vaughncochranart.com/cart/pr ... uctId=4076
I have German "gas mask bag"(?) that I purchased twenty years ago at an Army/Navy surplus that has been on hundreds of fly fishing/hunting trips. I also makes a great little boat bag.
I use gas mask bags also. Mine were Swiss.
I bought a fist full of them years ago at $.50 each
Even though I gave some away, I still have one for my binoculars and bird book, and two for fishing.
One for the surf, one for river smallies
I use a trap/skeet shotgun shell bag or 2 small boxes in my shirt

If you're looking to go cheap, grab your wife/girl friend/daughter (to avoid funny looks from other customers and sales people) and head to the women's handbag section in Walmart. (As per my daughter, Walmart has ugly purses compared to Target, so Walmart is where you want to look.) Sometimes you can find some decent bags that don't look too much like a purse. After you hang a few zingers, forceps, your license and what not on them your good to go. They also usually have lots of pockets inside and out too. Prices are less than $10. The ones I got are black nylon with detectable/adjustable shoulder straps and have held up quite well. They are so cheap, I've got a few setup for different waters, a trout bag, a smallie bag and one for ponds/panfish and an other for spin fishing.
For a few buck more, you could check out the camera bags too. I have a friend that uses one. They are a bit more rigid due to the padding so you have to get one that will fit your flyboxes.
Take a look at William Joseph OLD SCHOOL bag. With its wide mouth magnetic opening and a tool mesh pocket in the front it look like a winner shoulder bag. But I haven't seen one in the flesh . Still I'm drawn by it's simplicity.
I have a wonderful L.L. Bean bag. I have been made fun of by the other kids because it looks kinda like a purse but it has been great. I can easily fit two or three big fly boxes in it and I can just hang it over my shoulder and I barely notice it.
P.S. I couldn't find it on the website but they might still sell it somewhere. Good luck!

Hey AnglerDave,
Noticed that Sierra Trading Post has the William Joseph bandolier type pack ....now called the "Creel Pack" on slae for $42 thru this month only. That is a very good price.
Like pleco, I too have purchased a pocket book from wallmart. Mine is drab olive canvass and you would never know it was a pocket book except for the silk lining.
Since then, I have purchased a canvass bag off eBay that was designed for no particular use for under $4 and also a lambs wool fly patch (also off of eBay) for a buck. So for less than $10 including shipping I got a nice trout bag.
