Martin, with a 3 wt all your doing is storing a line, you really don't need a drag etc, I put a 1492 1/2 medalist on my daughters 4 wt and it is a great little reel for the price, unfortunately its right hand only. if you need a left hand model I can suggest a Ross flystart, my son uses one on his two weight and loves it.
Eric
I didn't think of the reliable pfluegers...thanks a lot, I'll look into that.
Thanks Eric.
Orvis Clearwater 2...under $50. I have several and they work just fine.

Martin 61..light enough...proven design...inexpensive...hard to beat a "Tuna Can" for the price...Rob

I like reels a little larger, this is metal and not plastic.
The Dogwood Canyon and Hobbs Creek reels from Bass Pro Shops are all metal with decent disc drags systems. I have landed a couple of 5.5 lbs LMB, 7 lb class grass carp and channel cats on my 3 wt depending heavily on the drags. They are around $35 - 40.

Cool, I don't want to spend more than $ 50 on a 3wt.
Thanks for the help gents, I really appreciate it.
There are a lot of nice reels out there for you and I will not post a pro or con on each one because I do not own all of them to give you an accurate evaluation. I do own an Okuma 4/5 and I am very happy with it's performance and you cannot beat the price. I am sure there are others out there which would equal it. For me, the Okuma 4/5 has a good feel to it and is rugged.
Martin
Check some of the Ross world wide reels, I think The 'FlyStart' might fall in line with what you are looking to spend and they're decent reels.

I found a 3/4 fly reel for $ 39.59 with tax and all. It's a Stone Creek Voyager, it looks pretty much like the Okuma Sierra only a bit smaller (which is what I was looking for). I didn't buy it because I wanted to hear what you guys have to say about that brand.
Thanks
I looked at it and it does look very much like the Okuma. I cannot tell you anything else about it since I cannot hold it in my hand and really evaluate it further. I did notice that the 3/4 is a click drag and the 5wt and up are disc drags. I don't know if that has any bearing on what you are looking for or not. I just typed in "Stone Creek Voyager reels" in the Google search window and found a site that sells them and other brands. Their price on the 3/4 was $40. Sorry I cannot give you more info on that reel.
I you are looking for serviceable AND inexpensive check the Topwater fly reels at Albright. I got a couple for our club's fly fishing class and I believe they'll do the job for you. Not bad at $29.99. Check at www.albrightflyfish.com
10/2 - There's a sale going on at Albright and these reels are currently $19.99
Thanks eveybody for your valuable help.
I can second this one. I picked up the Hobbs Creek for my 3wt this past spring and it has been as good as you would expect from a reel costing twice as much or more. It doesn't sound like you're looking for rod jewelry, just a decent reel, and that's what these are.
If I ever put the drag to the test, I'll let you know how that holds up, too.
If you have a Gander Mtn, I just saw where they have fly reels at 25% off when I was in there today.
well, the stone creek I saw yesterday happened to be the last one on display so I got $ 10 off the discounted price. Can't beat that, I will use it every now and then so I'm sure it'll be enough. I do gotta say that sucks to be me right now because I use to live really near to Sportmen's Warehouse and Cabela's so I got really good deals on in store sales...I don't have that option anymore.
Thanks again for everybody's help.
Any of the old BFR made click reels were great for light duty. Cortland Crown, Vista clicker, Rimfly, the old orvis cleawater and madison reels...all cheap, light weight and bullet proof + easy to switch right to left.

I'm not a big fan of loud clicking but then again, I don't think I'll be catching big fish on it. lol.
Hey Martin, I am familiar with Stone Creek Limited, It is a mom and pop operation that sells rod blanks, reels, tube kits etc. They make the wicker creels for both Orvis and Cabelas, import them from overseas and add the labels etc. The Stone Creek reels are actually Okuma with the Stone Creek name added to them. The owners name is Rocky Bloskas. I have done lots of business with him and he is a good guy and easy to deal with! For a quality reel at an economy price, I reccomend this reel.:D
Well, that's something I'm really glad to hear!! I'm really happy with it and can't wait to go out there to try it out.
I own more than one Okuma and I just love them.
Thanks a lot for the valuable info!
