Started with Mustads and see no reason to change.
When I started tying my own flies around 1957, Mustad Hooks were the "Quality" hook. Back then, Japanese hooks came in boxes of 250 assorted hooks many of which had an off set bends and very poorly made. Price per box was around fifteen cents. In my juvenile poverty, I tied many flies on these Japanese hooks. I horded my Mustads for important flies. I've always thought highly of Mustads and continue to do so today. Yes, I occasionally find an imperfectly closed eye or a less than perfect point, more often with hooks purchased in the 60's or 70's. Do I become enraged at the poor workmanship and throw 22,000 hooks out the window. No, I'm way too cheap. I've never had a Mustad hook break on a fish though I've broken a few myself trying to make Backbends or Klinkhammers. For all those who feel that Mustads aren't sharp enough, just two words----hook hone! I should point out that I have nothing against other hooks. I use them regularly. Mustad is just my "go to" hook. 8T :)
