Recommended Books
I've read a few flyfishing books this winter, Trout Tactics by Joe Humphreys, Fly Rod Trouting by Ed Shenk, Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass by Harry Murray, and Smallmouth Strategies for the Fly Rod by Will Ryan/Chris Armstrong. All were entertaining and informative.
Looking for additional titles to add to my slowly growing library. What does the collective wisdom of FAOL recommend?

Don't know the others you mentionned, but I like works by David Hughes, ... especially Reading the Water.
And they're on special @Amazon [url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811722635/102-4921779-6808936?v=glance:720f5]http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811722635/102-4921779-6808936?v=glance[/url:720f5]

For tying books, I go along with fcch's recommendation on ANY Dave Hughes book. I also like Dick Surette's Trout and Salmon Fly Index.

Well, given your location, you might be interested in the works of Charlie Fox and Vince Marinaro. Fox's book, That Wonderful World of Trout, is among my favorites.
Allan
-
The Longest Silence by Thomas McGuane.
-
Depends on what you're looking for. Instructional? Literature? Classic old stuff?
Here are my recommendations:
anything by Ray Bergman.
The River Why
Fishing Bamboo

I'd have to agree with the others that recommend Dave hughes, he's a talented and informative writer.
i have also enjoyed What the Trout Said by Datus Proper, as well as the definitive Trout by Schweibert (if you can find it, I luckily found a copy online a few years ago). This 2 volume set will last you a few weeks of daily reading time and will cover topics from history of the sport to species of trout, fly selections, knots, and etiquette. A great overall set on flyfishing.
I learned a lot from Prospecting for Trout by Tom Rosenbauer.
There is also a book review section here on FAOL you can check out for other recommendations. If you use the search function you can also find older threads about books people have enjoyed.

Here is a decent list:
The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference (you have to have this one)
Master The Cast by George Roberts (very clear, well done)
The Curtis Creek Manifesto (you could teach a kid with this one)
Presenting The Fly: A Practical Guide to the Most Important Element of Fly Fishing by Lefty Kreh (this is the best I've read, the man is on the stature of J Caswell http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
Last I recommend the Orvis Streamside Guides, as the few I've read and highlighted were quite good.
I can also make recommendations in Ice Climbing, World Politics, Six Guns, IPSC, and non fiction as I love to read.

"The Trout Pool Paradox" by George Black.
-
I like Fishing The Mountain Lakes by LaFontaine. I think that you could learn something useful from it even though you're not in the west. Also there are some funny stories in it.
-
The first book I read about this sport ws Bergman's "Trout". Was about the last book I read, too. Still got it. I would much rather re-invent the wheel, flyfishing-wise, than read what everyone else thinks.
Just my $.02

Trout is the most under-rated fly fishing book of all time. Although I guess it really was well thought of when it came out, but it remains 'the truth' regardless of age. More than many written since can claim.

Berman's Trout is a must especially Chapter 10, Water Types and How to Fish Them. I think about what Ray observed every time I fish. Other recommendations:
Dry Fly & Fast Water by George LaBranche
Ring of the Rise & Modern Dry Fly Code by Vince Marinaro
This Wonderful World of Trout and Rising Trout by Charles Fox
And when you find your self getting too serious:
A Wedding Gift by John Trainor Foote
Any of Ed Zern's books that you can get your hands on: To Hell With Fishing, How to Tell Fish From Fishermen, How to Catch Fishermen, Are Fishermen People. IMHO still the funniest books ever written on fly fishing.

"Understanding Trout Behavior" John Goddard & Brian Clarke.
Brilliant Insights in How Trout Act and Why
------------------
I look into... my fly box, and think about all the elements I should consider in choosing the perfect fly: water temperature, what stage of development the bugs are in, what the fish are eating right now. Then I remember what a guide told me: 'Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown and fuzzy and about five-eighths of an inch long.' - Allison Moir.
I wonder if he ever fished Saltwater ;)
-
Anything and everything by John Gierach. I've not found any of his books to be anything less than wonderful.

There's alot of great books out there. Some
of my favorites are: Limestone Legends,Terrestrial Fishing/Koch,Nymphs and the Trout/Sawyer,Complete Schwiebert,Rising
Trout/Fox,Fishing the Midge/Koch and Chalkstream Cronicals by Neil Patterson.
Most of these can be found at your local fly shop in Pennsylvania. Enjoy

Geezer,
I concur on "Understanding Trout Behavior". I also really like the chapter on how to see trout.
-
Flats Dude, recieved the book yesterday and The January chapter put me to sleep last night, I was saving it for Eleuthera, when the Wind Blws and the heavy rains come, but I don't think it will make it http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif.
His style, his passion of the Sheti imasha is magnficent "Native Waters" is a must read for all.
Taking it to bed again tonight

Phil...haven't got mine yet, Barnes and Noble said they ain't got it...hmmm.
-
Another good read - just finished The Battenkill by John Merwin. I had always wondered why so many Orvis products were called Battenkill this and that, now I know! I never thought reading about a river's history and geology could be so interesting. Also some good tips fishing spots, although possibly a bit outdated by now.
-
One of my favourite books is Flytyers Masterclass by Oliver Edwards. Good book for tying realistic imitators; detailed explanations.
-
Oliver Edwards' Flytyer's Masterclass is THE book to have!!! Also if you really want some good DVDs check out Oliver Edwards' Essential Skills.

Aside from the others mentioned already, in the realm of trout fishing, I like "Slack Line Strategies for Fly Fishing" by John Judy, and "Trout Maverick" by Leonard Wright Jr.
For bass and panfish: "Black Bass & the FLy Rod" by the late Charles F Waterman, "The Sunfishes" and "Bassin' With a Fly Rod" by Jack Ellis, and "Bluegill...Fly Fishing and Flies" and "Largemouth Bass Fly-Fishing" by Terry and Roxanne Wilson.
For pike: "Pike on the FLy" by Reynolds and Berryman.
For carp: "Carp on the Fly" by Reynolds, Befus, and Berryman.
For saltwater, Lefty Kreh's "Flyfishing in Saltwater" is good but for the SW game there is so much regional and species variety it has hard to put together a basic list. Some areas have seen very little in print in book form.
-
Some of my favourites are: Books by Vince Marinaro, and as Fly Fishing Texas states,"What The Trout Said " by Datus Proper, and "Trout" by Schweibert,
I also agree with Old Geyser, in his stated rememberance of what a guide told him "90 percent of what a trout eats is brown and fuzzy and about five-eights of an inch long.
Thats why my favourite flies are Hare and Coppers about size 12,and also what I call Brown Skungies, size 12,Hares fur body and tail, copper rib, gold beadhead, and a soft partridge hackle tied in front of the bead, and weighted. Regards, Highwood NZ

Looks like I need a bigger bookshelf ;-)
Thanks for the recommendations.

Please let me recommend the writings of Dana S. Lamb. gerry l

I have read, enjoyed, and learned something from many of the books mentioned previously, but my most valued book is "Fly Fishing Strategy" by Doug Swisher and Carl Richards, illustrated by Dave Whitlock. I wish they would come out with a revised edition of this one as they have with "Selective Trout".
