Birds Nest turned bluegill fly

Last week, I visited a fly shop and picked up a size 18 olive Bird's Nest. As I sat at my vise this past weekend, I started playing with the general pattern and came up with this...

Sz 12 curved caddis hook, black nickel 1/8" bead, brown partridge tail, black peacock ice dub dubbed chunky with a copper wire rib, brown partridge legs, purple ice dub thorax

The picture was taken after a dozen or so gills decided it looked good enough to eat. Hope y'all enjoy...

Good looking fly. Sure to catch fishermen as well as fish. Nice job dressing the fly and the color choices.

Allowing a few bluegills to pick out the dubbing is a great technique. Good looking bug there young man.

Zac it's funny you post that fly. Last night Tim tied up some flies in a purple and pink color combo. He said he will fish it behind the SandSTONE ampitheater creek after a concert and see what kind of fish he can catch. It looked like a real "crazy charlie". Tim's computer is down he said or he might be able to post a pic of it.

Larry, that sounds like something Tim would do! Haha I'm sure it will work.

8T, I'm sure it would. I have a lot of chartreuse in my box already, and I was looking for a dark, small, "something buggy" nymph. That's why I went with purple. After I lost the one pictured, I tied on one with a hares ear body and peacock/green thorax and it did alright too.

I'm not claiming anything here is new, but I reckon this general pattern is gonna work for a wide range of fish. It would probably look pretty cool with a pair of black or white biots as a tail and shellback... but I'm too lazy to do 'em that way.

i'd use fine white rubber legs for tail and wing.

Your fly looks great as is. I just like a spot of hot color on my brim flies but if you already have lots of patterns like that purple seems to be a good choice. 8T :)
