We've had a wet summer so far here in the Missouri Ozarks, we're about 10" above normal. I notice poison starting to turn in hedge rows and along fence lines. I don't notice trees starting to turn yet. Just this morning I heard acorns falling with some hitting the metal roof on my garage. Squirrels are running around the yard with acorns in their mouth.
I don't know what signals trees to start turning or what makes some years more colorful than others. Usually peak color around here is mid October.
On the coast of WA some trees have started to change. It seems to be early this year
Just got back from an Alaskan cruise and they are changing up there. Here in the Sea-Tac area there is a little color showing, not much, but some. Like Eric, it seems to be a little early.
Leaf color change depends on the length of daylight. If cloudy for extended periods of time, that may very well have something to do with it. Dogwoods are one of the first to show any color.

My other half has family in southern Michigan. They already have Maples turning. I remember when we lived up there, the last year we were there, Maples started turning in August.
Many, many, years ago, we had an absolutely amazing Fall here in northeastern OK. Oak trees turned gold, and the few maples that were planted turned brilliant red. Sweetgum trees would turn gold, with some orange. Normally, we don't get much color here. Our summers are so hot and dry, most leaves will start to wither and dry, going from green to a dull yellowish-brown, then to brown. The year we had the amazing color, I asked some tree care folks about the colors, and they told me it was because we had such a wet summer that year.
All of you folks that had the really wet summer, I wouldn't be surprised if you get an amazing Fall color display this year.
I haven't checked out the high country aspens, but things are still very green way down here at 5500 feet.
Hi. Yes, up here in PA I've been seeing locust tree leaves turning and this past week I noticed some oak and maple doing the same. But, it's a great time to be on the water.
Some of our maples started showing hues of red about 2 weeks ago in my area. Saw my first fully orange tree yesterday in my travels. Can only hope for an early leaf drop!!!
Slate,How come an early leaf drop?Wait a minute it's still August.I'm not ready for this
Some places the leaves are just starting to turn in Maine. Mostly it's the maples with a few oaks I've seen in the Western portion of the state.
Everything is turning nice and brown here.

As the first day of dove season I can see more populars turning and poison ivy along the fence lines I was walking around the fields, not many doves flying, too hot ,will walk back out around 4:00 this afternoon.
Saw on the new hear in Greenville, SC that the leaves would be turning much earlier this year due to the rain and the leaves' steams actually almost like rotting off.
I just returned from a 10 day vacation and when I was cutting the grass I notice tons of leaves have falling from the trees here in Tennessee, not sure if it's from lack of rain or the length of daylight. Seems way to early for leaves dropping off already.
every year for along time they have said that colors here arent as much cause of dry summers, this year we have had rain all the way threw, spring up until now, grass never went brown, flowers stayed blooming, still are... so unless we have had to much rain, from all the no rain no color reports, with the rain, we should have the best colors here we have had in twenty years or so, give or take... me myself am waiting to see painted mountains in full color ... :-)
Anyone wanting to see leaves change? Come help me change them to ash. I have millions of them.
