Stocker Question

I have just made an amazing discovery. The creek I grew up fishing on as a kid was stocked this past spring twice with rainbow!!! It's less than 10 minutes from my house!!

My first question is; Where the blankety blank have I been? :rolleyes:

Second question is where do you think the trout will be mostly upstream or down? The bridge where they stock is very close to the Kentucky line, if they went downstream very far, I'm going to need out of state license:( but if they mostly go upstream I'm in good shape.:D

PS In case you are wondering I didn't get that backwards. I live in TN but the creek runs north to KY.

Being a tightwad I would try fishing upstream first. I would guess that most of the fish stay in Tennesse anyway. Unless there is some kind of co-operative agreement in place I doubt your fisheries people are planting fish they expect to go out of state before being caught.

A few years ago they did a study here by radio tagging fish. They found that every fish they tagged stayed within a 1/2 mile from where they were stocked.

trout movement depends on stream conditions, hatchery locations and strain, and more.The above is a good artiucle showing how complicated it really is.

I'll bet you're right. Now that I think about it I realized how dumb a question that is. Down stream just across the line in KY there is a concrete bridge with tiles running across it. We call them a slab bridge, I don't know the correct term, but the only way for water to run under them is through a series of tiles that are probably 12 to 16 inches across. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I have always been told that fish wouldn't swim through them?! Which if true, would keep them on the TN side. Thanks rainbowchaser, I think you just answered my question. :D

Well, you already know the answer...you'll be buying that OOS license at some time...you'll just be itching to find out what is "just around the next bend"

I doubt anyone could tell for sure if those fish have migrated or not.

Anyhow, one way to check would be through the KY depart. of resources site...if it is considered a trout stream, they'll ask for a trout stamp as well as a fishing license.

With the lake at one of the Scout camps up here needing to be drained to repair the head gate, I was discussing the re-stocking with the Camp Ranger. We were talking about the per fish costs and brookies were $4 each while rainbows and cuts were $1 each.

Seemed like a no brainer to me. Restock with rainbows or cuts. Not so simple it turns out. Mark tells me the rainbows and cuts will migrate. They let the lake fill up and run over the spillway. This is a high mountain camp and the resulting stream is step across at any point on the camp. Mark said the 'bows and cuts will just skedaddle on downstream. The brookies stay put. They also create a self sustainable population even with boys taking fish to eat.

This would lead me to think that they would have to have a way to keep the fish put before they stocked that stream.

The other possibility (likely given the fact that it was stocked twice and they used rainbows) is that the state assumes it's a pure put & take stream, and that they expect the fish to gone within a month or so anyway. Are summer stream temps cool enough to sustain trout?

redietz, I suspect you are right and the fish will be gone. I think the temp will be cool enough, there are a lot of springs feeding into that creek and they are all pretty cold. I was hopeing to get a chance to try it out this past weekend, but I didn't get to.:( Maybe next weekend.

Is this the Green that you're talking about? I've meant to fish that stream for a long time. BTW, Ida might be dumping on us next weekend. Go fishing when you can.

Uncle Jesse I'm thinking about starting into the water headed upstream and then doing a real quick U turn and head downstream. You think that'll fool the fish?:D

Take a friend or acquaintenance with really nice equipment and go the opposite direction from him, try to look like a 12 year old who doesn't know what he's doing. I can give you instruction on the not knowing what your doing part.

I think if you approach the stream bumbling and stomping, acting like you don't even KNOW there's fish in there, you'll be in luck. Bring a zebco strung up with flourescent 12lb stren, complete with treble hook and 1 oz. weight to complete the disguise!

Seriously though, if there has been any major current flow, I'd look downstream.
