I came across an older flyfishing book and several pattern call for seal fur dubbing. I think I have seen some somewhere, but is there a more common readily available option that would be somewhat consistent with regards to texture, etc? Thanks for any suggstions, Jim
Paul Jorgenson's Seal Ex is great never close to the real thing. He used it on almost all his flies.

Just an update for you guys - Hunter's Angling was bought out by Stone River Outfitters of Bedford, New Hampshire on October 28th, 2005. They still offer the same great service and products as Hunter's did though. I for one would really like to see them as a sponsor here (and have written them telling them so).

Other good sources for seal include John McLain at [url=http://www.feathersmc.com:f42cb]www.feathersmc.com[/url:f42cb] and Jim Smith in the UK, who can be reached via the Yahoo group flytyingmaterialstrading. Both are good, reliable sources of legal seal.

I had a very good experience with...John McLain at [url=http://www.feathersmc.com:60298]www.feathersmc.com[/url:60298] ...recently when ordering some....he even offered to dye some in more insect-like colors then is usually available with seal....also good pricing...

Seal is readily available (and probably cheaper than SLF) from the sources already mentioned. You simply can't go wrong w/ feathersmc.com.
The subs that I've seen subsitute sparkle or flash to simulate seal's transluscence. You're better of finding the real thing.
