Sad, really really sad... (off topic)

Some of you may remember the x-mas board. My list included an Airedale T. puppy. Somehow, a lill' delayed, but still Santa managed to bring me the pooch.

We called her Frida, like the mexican artist. My mother, who had the idea for the name, later came to me saying that she was worried about the name. Frida Khalo had a painfull life with so many illnesses you'll need 3 sets of hands to count them. And she didn't wanted her to be coursed to follow the same path.

Well folks... Always listen to your hearts and never ever name your puppy Frida.

As soon as she was vaccinated for kennel cough she got an eye condition called "blue-eye syndrome" which temporarily blured her vision. As it is an allergic response, the vet called for corticoid eye drops. But as we started with the treatment, she developed a mild case of kennel cough, nothing to be worried about, the vet said.

I gave her the drops and the baby's flu medicine prescribed for the cough. She was recovering and became an "airdale hound" in the process, as she relayed on her nose rather than on her blured eyes to roam the house and the garden and the nearby front yards.....

But on friday she started to have a bit of diarrhea which became a lot worst with the hours. I rushed to a friend of mine's practice. Not the former vet whoe prescribed all the corticoid and stuff -she made the contact for me to find the airedale- but an old friend who works with homeopathy and works wonders.

He was optimistical.

And the prescription just included a single drop of a medicine 3 times a day. No more corticoids or other "regular" substances.

Well... Frida is very very sick. She's got the worst case of diarrhea I've ever seen in a living thing. This morning she doesn't even want to drink a drop of water, don't even talk about talking a walk or even wagging her tail. She's just lying there in her bed reduced to her minimal expresion.

The vet is still optimistical, he says that's the way the drugs work. I'm not all that positive about it. I've seen animals pass away for less than that. I think she's still with us only because A.T. are known to be such a sturdy breed.

It's really really sad.

Dave, I'm so sorry to hear this about Frida. My own Airedale, Gus, has been a handful over the years to be sure but I understand just how you can feel about yours. I'll be holding you both in the light.

Here's an update:

Frida decided to stand up after a few drinks of water I managed to shoot into her throat using a syringe. She "did her bizz" and then went back to her bed. At least she wagged her tail a bit and streched her back and stuff.

So seems like lill' by lill' she'll get back on her four. Or at least that's what I hope. If that doesn't happen by noon time, vet says, we'll have to rush her to the practice 'cause she'll be needing an I.V. line to have her hydrated.

That's it for now.

Make sure she doesnt have Parvo. One of my Aussies had it and it about killed him. My other Aussie Babe also had Kennel cough right after our move to the Midwest.

Dave, I'm really really sorry!

Please be sure her fluid and electrolytes are up to snuff...diarrhea can really get them out of wack...personally I wouldn't hesitate on the IV's.

I was thinking this sounds more like parvo caught after vaccination. If it is parvo then you have a very very lucky puppy, a nasty virus which many people are negligent about, especially contamination.

Our pup got parvo. Amy got her to the vet right away. Parvo cna be fatal if not treated within hours of the first symptoms. The vet's office was closed for the day but he rushed in to save our puppy. Didn't charge any extra fee either. Dave, remember all are His creation. He takes care of all creatures great and small.

I will certainly pray for you & Frida...my old girl Cocoa is 13 years old (Shepherd/Chow) & if I could clone a dog for kids, she would be the one. NEVER bites, but if ANY or ALL of the Grandkids are over, Cocoa is between them & the door or them & strangers ALWAYS! She also acts like a puppy when the kids are here & they can & DO climb all over her. We could all learn about love & loyalty from our 4 legged friends. I hope & pray your relationship with Frida has many more years in store.

have a Tri-Colored Red Aussie that survived Parvo as a puppy (it is a horrible sickness)and is one of the greatest dogs on the face of the earth, ever seen an 80lb lap dog, he thinks he is now.

We are praying for you and your family and especially for Frida, that she gets better no matter what is ailing her.

BACK FROM THE VET'S

Well It's not parvo nor hepatitis. Just the reaction to the vaccine. No more shots for her, ever!

She woke up from her close-to-death state yesterday afternoon at 4pm EST like anything had happened.

However, she went right back to bed after a short walk outside. And slept the entire night. Just like a healthy pooch.

Today she's much much better. She ate a lill' yogurt and is drinking from her bowl all by herself so no longer do I need to torture her with 5ml of water every 10 mins being shot into her guts with the syringe.

I have to thank you all cause what happened yesterday was trully a MIRACLE. And, in it, all your prayers had a powerfull influence, that's for sure.

Putting it all in perspective!

Kinda makes when they poop on the carpet, chew up your favorite wading shoes left outside to dry, and cry all night, seem a little trivial and a little more tolerable, doesn't it?

Well, I think we are on the "other side of the river" by now.

Frida is much much better today. She had been fasting for long long hours so today her only interest has been her food bowl. But still she is back at learning tricks which makes me so very happy.

I think the worst is over and from now she'll need to recover the weight she lost. And it was a lot in just a few hours.

The "blue eye syndrome" is going away too now that her body can focus on that.

oh, and Terry, Frida's temperament is so great, she have yet to chew on anything other than her toys. Being a quick learner I only need to tell her "NO" one time for her to get the idea.

But still when she got so sick I would have rather seen her roaming everywhere, even chewing on my rods, than lying there on her bed, one step away from the pearly gates.

Fireman and akalooker - when you mention "Aussies" do you mean Australian Cattle Dogs? I have a purebred cattle dog, "Ruffie" [named after ZZ Top's 'Rough Boy'], and she is the sweetest thing. Also keeps me in stitches with all her antics! She's the "blue" version.

Great to hear that Frida is on the mend - Dave you absolutely saved her life by keeping the fluids up. Pat yourself on the back.

This is a bit long but I think it's worth it. My apologies if it exceeds the limit.

A Man and His Dog

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when he suddenly realised that he was dead. He remembered dying and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road - it looked like it was made of the finest marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?".
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?", the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man at the desk gestured and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," the traveller asked gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?"
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree, reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man, "Do you have any water?".
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveller said, pointing to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand-pump with a bowl beside it. The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?", the traveller asked.
"This is Heaven," the man answered.
"Well, that's confusing!" the traveller said, "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."
