I am looking for a good casting DVD for those winter months. What is the best one out there?
As a beginner, "Joan Wulff's Dynamics of Fly Casting" helped me the most. A friend loaned me a Lefty Kreh (I think) video (don't remember the name) that was a little more advanced...and good.
Try Mel Krieger's "The Essence of Fly Casting". Highly recommended.

I'll second the Joan Wulff for beginners and intermediates.
I thought the Rio speycasting video hosted by Simon McGarthwaite (sp?) was really, really good. All the casts shown can be done one-handed.
Thanks gentlemen. My wife is looking for Christmas presents and I was leaning toward lefty... Now, I think that I am going to go with th Krieger video.
I'm reluctant to say this, but I didn't find the Krieger DVD all that helpful.

The DVD doesn't have the foreign subtitles.
...and I threw this in here because it's just good advise!

Here are some from the Joan Wulff DVD. By the way...I have all the videos mentioned in this thread. They are all good and all worth having.

I've posted a number of the better videos on this page that are cuts from various casting DVDs available (all the DVDs listed in the thread for starters and more) out there.
OK, so which dvd is the third video (the good advise) from?
It's actually a clip from the TV series The New Fly Fisher. http://www.thenewflyfisher.com/
Mel was a guest host on one of the series. It's not a really a casting video. They have a "tips" segment with each episode.
(Canadian made, available on some PBS stations in the US, with some support from the FFF) In Canada it's available on WFN, Rogers and a few other networks.
I own virtually every casting video on the market. I have all the major ones and a few minor ones. If you are a beginner, you can't go wrong with Lefty or Joan or Mel. However, if you've got the basics down and want to improve your casting, George Roberts' Saltwater Fly Casting: 10 Steps to Distance and Power is head and shoulders above the rest. The other videos deal with casting principles, but Roberts is the only one that has an actual step-by-step program to get better. Yes, I know a lot of people will look at the title and say, "I don't fish in saltwater." Just ignore that, though. The video is all about perfecting the basic casting stroke. It applies as much to freshwater as to salt.
