Thanks for posting this Mark. It's too bad that to most Americans, Memorial Day is the first three day weekend of summer and nothing more. Except maybe a big sale at one of the local big box stores, or car dealerships.
It's also too bad that in order to honor those who have served, sacraficed and died for freedom have to be honored ahead of Memorial Day, so as not be lost amoung the hot dogs and beer.
Oh. And no I'm not bitter.
It brought a tear to my eye...thanks Mark!

The day and it's meaning is not lost here.
Stay tuned for our Memorial Week issue.

Thanks Marco.
God bless those two Vets and every other Vet who is or has served us in the military. They suffered so those of us back home wouldn't have to.
They are the best of the best!
Happy Trails!

And to think that at least 13 posters saw this thread since it was posted and chose to ignore it.
Trust me, It is not I who seek recognition as much as this post in itself demands it.
Mark
Marco,
GREAT picture!
As most of you know, I think this site & my FAOL family members are the best......not just as flyfishers, but as Patriots who so fully & openly support our troops, past & present.
God Bless & thank you all....your support gives strength!
Mike
Ditto ... words can't express our thanks to these "best of the best".

Sometimes we look and don't post because theres nothing one can say about our heroes that the picture doesn't convey .Its hard to speak when you see something so overwhelming. There is allot of posts I don't comment on as the father of a son serving in the army because of how fickle some politically correct people are in this world. For the sake of peace and respect for LF and JC and others I try to keep my tongue and comments to myself . Nothing but pride, respect and honor for our great service men ,veterans of past and present and our fallen.

Mike
I am one who looked and did not post.It is a very moving photo, especially to me as the proud father of a US Marine, but I have seen this pic a thousand times.
Bill
I saw it, was moved by it, and moved on. I did not see the need to post. I make no apology for that.
Perhaps more accurately, I was just curious that those who posted in other topics in this forum chose to ignore or not comment I did not mean those who merely opened and chose to do whatever ( ignore).
Personally, I too saw this picture a thousand times. EACH of those thousand times was by choice.
Silly me.
Mark
PS: To give proper and much deserved credit, this photo was attached to a "farewell" column by Ben Stein in which he chose to show his eternal gratitude to THOSE who have died and are dying in the cause of freedom.

Hey Marco,
Yes, it is a moving picture. I believe
I can appreciate what it represents without
comment. I'm sure others can too. What
bothers me is that you feel the need to
count how many folks fail to respond to it.
We all respond in different ways. Many of us here on FAOL are veterans. Some of us
carry our own scars and memories. I would
not judge folks by thier failure to post a
comment on a picture. Warm regards, Jim
Marco;
You judge to harshly.
I also have opened this thread before, multiple times in fact. I have not commented, because I cannot add to what has been said, and I dare not take away from it.
The image and the message it portrays bring tears of joy, sadness, gratitude, etc.... I am grateful to those who have/do/will serve. I let them know when I can. That is enough.
Don
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Thanks Mark.

The photo never showed up on my screen....
Sometimes a picture really does say a thousand words.

A bum-legged old man and a drunk. That's all you got?
That's WHAT I got.
As a veteran of my own little countrys wars I feel that I don't need to comment.I fought tooth and nail and lost many close friends and some of my own humanity for democracy and I get a little sensitive when someone tries to force my freedom of choice!Sorry for that!I'll post when and what I want(within the rules of course)thank you very much!Apologies to all for the tone of this post it's just something I feel strongly about.
crooks..........well said.
Marco,
I've seen this photo many times and felt no obligation to respond. My wife and I are both veterans. She, a 6 year US Army vet and I, a 27 year AF retired vet. We will be attending the Memorial Services at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska on Monday at Noon. We were both honored to serve our country. Marco, how will you be spending your Memorial Day?
God Bless our personnel in Uniform around the world and their families. Keep them from harm's way and bring them home safely.

Marco, nice photograph, but your attitude detracts from the message of those two men embracing. imho
------------------
"Give me ambiguity or give me something else"
Marco, as a Viet Vet I take exception to your comment about those who dont fit your ideas on "posting". I may be "out of line" on this ,BUT YOU need to lighten up.
Bill
I think the picture you have posted is moving, no question of it, but just because someone doen't post doesn't mean that they are not impacted or have no feeling for your post. Combat veterans don't need to say anything, it can be seen in the eyes and felt in the heart and they all know exactly what the other one is feeling, "don't mean nothin'"
Gentlemen:
Thanks for your responses.
Mark
PS: To those to whom this matters as a "credential".

I believe drolfson said it best "I have not commented, because I cannot add to what has been said, and I dare not take away from it. "
..the heart felt gratitude & honor to call this Marine a fellow citizen, is beyond my feeble attempts to put in words! Thank you & thanks to my son, home safe & sound & due to go back...may God protect them all & may He provide special places for those, such as this noble Marine!
------------------
"..so many fish, so many flies..do I have enough time?"
Marcus, with the greatest respect, you really do need to lighten up. You are turning a quiet moment of respect into a disagreement that shames the image.
Come on Gringo...with all do respect...what's the point of beating a dead horse?
Hey Skeet;
"...the heartfelt gratitude and honor to call this Marine a fellow citizen is beyond my feeble attempts to put into words....", are words I wish I would have used to caption this photograph. Instead I chose " You too will stand and salute". There were some here who somehow read " will" as "should" into that caption. I assure everyone, that was not the intent.
To the extent that I caused a misunderstanding over such a captured sacred moment, I apologize.
Mark
PS. I will ask JC to remove this thread. It is not to be argued over.
Marco you can delete this thread yourself using the edit function for your origional post. Not saying you should or have to but you have that option on any thread you start.

all leaders tangle; mine are just better at it than most. Jim
Hey, Marco
Please don't remove it! I was truly touched. I had not seen that image. I do thank oyu for sharing.
Don
Marco,
We just returned to town....Thank you for not removing this thread, or I'd not have seen the picture. It's truly beautiful.

Your attitude determines your altitude!
Apparently those of us who were moved by this powerful image are not alone. I just "googled" Sgt. Mark Graunkes' name, read and ...............

Remember
Gotta bump this up. Doesn't deserve to be lost in 6th.

The devastating effects of war on body, mind, and soul simply can not be understood by those who have not been there. For those who thirst for that understanding they may never be quenched.
Steeped in honor, this image brings us haunting toward that understanding. One suddenly finds themselves emotionally confronted, conflicted, and compelled. These emotions whether inward or outward, can not easily be gauged. However for the few who do possibly feel nothing, it is my hope that at the least they are not on this board.
AC
Hey there AC;
I am humbled by your ability to convey in words EXACTLY what I attempted to convey in my second post. You sir, are RIGHT ON!
Mark
My Friend,
It is not possible for those who have not been there to know, fully appreciate, or understand. The need for them to know, fully appreciate, or understand is a need that can never be satisfied. Your served and sacrifice must be satisfaction enough.
I salute you, as I am sure do most if not all of us at FAOL!
