I promised a co-worker that I would repair her noodle rod but when I went to the garage to get the bunch of broken fiberglasss rod blank pieces I had set aside for such things I learned that they were thrown out as garbage during the last garage clean-up ( guess I should have participated instead of going fishing). I have heard of using shrink wrap for the sleeve but have never tried it. Has anyone here done it that way and did it work?

Ladyfisher I have read through it twice allready. It definately calls for a piece of glass rod blank for the sleeve over the break but I don't have any more broken glass rods and was wondering about a viable substitute. This was an expensive rod and the owner is ready to buy a cheap childs rod just to break it for a sleeve if necessary but I had heard of the shrink wrap repair and was wondering about it's effectiveness.

I have a few section layiing around but the big question is what is the od of the piece that is broken and that you need to make a sleeve for.
The method of using shrink tube is not worth the effort and the result would not be staisfactory for you I am sure. I have a couple of brokne rods that people wanted repaired that just were not worth it so I may have what you need.
If that fails, you may want to contact Neil at Neils Fishing tackle, or one of the many sponsors of this great board that sell rod building "stuff". Most of them have broken sections laying around that may just meet your needs.
Jack the rod repair article here on FAOL ( I haven't actually done this before)says that the sleeve should be fiberglass over a broken graphite rod with a very short plug of either graphite or glass on the inside. This way the sleeve has a slower action than the blank and is carried along when the blank flexs. I figure I need about a 4.5 inch piece of glass to fit over a graphite blank that I miked at .117" to .123" in that span.
dleo I appreciate the offer and will get back to you if Jack doesn't have a usable piece but it will not be untill after the Saturday after next as I'm going to be vacationing north of Jack's home and won't have a computer available.
As I said I have never done this sort of repair before and if anyone has any warnings of pitfalls I may run into or clarifications of the article ladyfisher referred to they would be appreciated.

I have done a couple of repairs with pretty good results. The problem with most is getting broken blank pieces which are the correct diameter to both use as an insert and as a sleeve. Fibreglass can also be hard to find nowadays. To my knowledge, those repairs I have done have stood up so far and saved valuable rods for my customers. As I was unable to get an exact dia. match of scrap pieces, I had to build up the outer rod blank with winding thread to provide a closer fit for the outer splice. Cut both ends of the break square, insert the core splice using rod bond epoxy and let sit overnight to cure. Be certain to clean off any excess epoxy with rubbing alcohol. Pre fit everything for correct fits. Install the outer sleeve using rod bond. Once cured, assemble the rod, wrap over the entire splice with size A winding thread, then epoxy finish. Finding blank scraps with the closest fits are the key to a good looking repair without the rod looking like it had swollen overnight. This can be a time consuming, costly repair which provides no guarantee. Yes the rod will certainly flex different and if it breaks again, it will likely be one either side of the splice. I know of one such customer who continues to catch very large Steelhead (10lb) on a rod that belonged to his father and was spliced by me. Makes me feel good to see him catch those fish on my repair job. That fix was done 6 years ago. I hope I have provided some help to you, so good luck.

Jack I'll read just about anything thats well written. I'm currently struggling through an old book called The age of Jackson (pretty dry) and also reading the years best fantasy and horror anthology from 2000 (it was cheap and has some good stories) and have a mystery lying on the floor next to the bed to start next. I'm never sure what book will catch my attention or why. If you read this before 1:30 a.m. friday morning give me a call at the number I sent you.
