Ron,
I've got to believe a couple of things about the answer:
1)Flies bought in the US are predominantly tied elsewhere and imported.
2)The Royal Coachman is not a frequently tied fly here in the US, in part, because of the wings.
Since LF stated in one of her posts on the 2nd highest fly sold thread that the survey was done of fly manufacturers and dealers, the respondents to the survey gave an answer
3)That was a combination of RC and Royal Wulffs.
Now I obviously could be wrong but I have to say, the only Royals I've seen in the last 5 or more years have been Wulffs.
Anyway, no big thing and interesting nonetheless.

I bet a huge number of those flies never see the water more than once or twice and then sit in an expense vest somewhere in the attic. I hate to pick on those young urban professionals again but ........ 8T http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it's a real short camping season.

If this survey was done maybe 25-30 years ago, I would have said Royal Coachman for sure. It is a fly that I knew about long before I became a fly fisherman. I'm sure every beginning fly fisherman couldn't help but buy one when they first started out. But most fly fishing magazines and modern era books tend to promote the "match the hatch" approach so fishermen aren't programmed to reach for a fly like a Royal Coachman when actually fishing. If you go back to the Ray Bergman era, you will see that most fishermen carried an array of flies that they had confidence in and didn't get overly caught up in exactly matching stream insects.

Nick,
If you scroll back through the posts, you'll find the answer was "Royal Coachman". There were a lot of guesses before the answer was given and some discussion of it afterwards.

I'll say woolly bugger. I'll also hazzard to guess that more flys are sold at Walmart, etc. than at fly shops.
Yikes! I'm way behind on this posting... excuse me.
