Teasels, I'm not sure that I agree with your statement that Flyfishers don't follow the trends and buy the newest and fanciest equipment. I just received the latest Orvis mailer. They used a lot of print space to discuss their newest rod which is priced in the $675 range. If there is a market for this rod, then there are some Flyfishers somewhere that are buying the newest and fanciest products. I'm not trying to single out Orvis, the other manufacturers introduce new FF rods every year too. Someone is buying them.
Bass Pro may have been started by someone that was fishing in the tournaments, but that is not the only type of fishing equipment that they carry. How much of what type of equipment is stocked will depend directly on how much and how fast the products sell.
I think a lot of FF'ers will give the average tournament angler a run for his money on how much cash they have tied up in fishing. My personal investment seems to keep growing every year. I'm even in the category where my boat is worth more than the pickup I pull it with, but I'm not sure that's saying very much.
If you want to learn how to catch bass, the tournament folks, such as BASS, have a lot of very good information available. The rods and "lures" maybe different than we use but those folks are experts on how to catch bass.

I'll be the first one to come out of the closet and PROUDLY admit I am a member of B.A.S.S. Yea I'm one of them too, minus the fancy boat and patch festooned clothing.
The number of bass I catch has increased exponentially since I've been a member thanks to their great magazine Bassmaster which DOES occasionally contain articles on flyfishing for bass.
I love BPS for the "other" tackle they sell which is what Johnny Morris had in mind when he founded the business.
