Sounds like I may have inadvertently dodged a bullet. I had a rod listed a short while ago that I'm actually getting ready to re-post and received an inquiry (via the SEFF board) from him about a possible trade. I passed, but it was for a rod described as "a new, custom bamboo 6'9" 2/1 4wt. with original sock and tube. Rod was base on a F E Thomas taper." No telling whether I'd have ever seen it or whether that rod was one of his ill-gotten gains, but I'm feeling lucky for not having taken him up on it.
Likewise. I had been in talks with him to buy a saltwater outfit and then some flies. Glad that didn't pan out. He kept flaking out on meeting up (I live right down the road from where he's listed as currently living).
On another note, I have a friend who is a police officer in Staunton and would be happy to pass along his info.
This guy is scum of the earth. He'll pay his dues when he meets his maker.
(sigh) This is something I word-for-word posted to Washingtonflyfishing.com:
Hey guys.. wanted to check in.
Ole Scott Martin scammed PAflyfish.com's members to the tune of about $1100. How do I know this? I was part of his scam.
Not by choice. No, basically he let out his sob story when selling a gift card (likely ill gotten), and I decided to white knight and help him visit his dying daughter with cancer before her big surgery.
So, I started a drive to raise money, and within a short time frame I got weird feelings the way he was "selling" his cause to people. Shortly at the end of my goal, Scott got grabby with the money and I basically just sent it on wishing to wash my entire hands of the enterprise.
Shortly after the truth came out. I was, fortunatly, able to return some money in checks, but despite promises of returnign all the PayPal money, Scott scammed everyone out of their cash, to say nothing of my ability to show my face on that forum again.
A despicable, terrible human who's willing to lie about his daughter having cancer, as well as duty to the country.
Furthermore, I see there's some question about Orvis equipment. Scott's original story started when he claimed to be selling a gift card obtained from Orvis for returning a rod. During the saga of my own fund raising thread, a major representive from Orvis came in and offered Scott a brand new replacement rod for the one he supposedly traded in, IIRC a Superfine Touch 2wt (but my memory sucks). Shortly afterwards, the supposedly destitute Mr. Martin was discovered on ultralightflyfishing.com trying to drum up a reel to match.
Scott was also quite famous for posting a rather lovely bamboo rod from PHW, handmade with adorned with the equvilent of his ribbons earned. That rod was on the selling block of PAflyfish, or for trade for a kayak, at some point abotu a month or so before the big blow out.
Anyways. THought I'd give you some more fuel.

I'm glad Gfen chimed in with the facts from PAFF.........One thing for sure, if I ever run into that scam artist on a stream here in Pa, he'll take a bath..........
Was this the rod he was trying to peddle?

He doesn't want to come say, "Hi" around here. I'll strangle him with my oxygen hose.
Good Morning, Everbody...
To answer a few questions and because of further requests to chime in, here's the scoop:
cheffy... While Guido may be in retirement/hiding, I DO have the number for his son, Nunzio. He's taking over the "family business..."
gfen... Regarding the quote you included from herefishy as it pertains to me... In all honesty, I don't know how much money was collected on my behalf back then, or if all that was sent to the dirt-bag in question was accounted for and forwarded my way. I was among the fortunate, however, in that many of the members here on FAOL who wanted to help came to me directly, thereby denying a certain somebody any chance at practicing his "back-door" tactics. How sad a human being he is...
And, kbproctor? If you built that rod for him out of the goodness of your heart, you have my sympathies. Said individual seems to have honed his "collecting" skills to a fine science, as I consider myself pretty good at reading people, and I missed his intent by a wide margin. I should have known better, but my mind was elsewhere...
To you all, I will say one last thing... DON'T let the actions of "He Who Shall Not Be Named" taint the heart and soul of this fine collection of fly-wranglers. You've always been there for me when I needed you, and if the chance arises, I will return the kindnesses and friendships ten-fold. FAOL is a class act in SO many ways that I believe we owe it to ourselves to pull the proverbial chain and flush this garbage down the toilet, once and for all...
So sayeth hairwing530, aka Jerry, on this fine May morning...
I once read a story about John Gotti (the Teflon Don). If you ticked him off today he would not get you tomorrow. but maybe a year or so later you could be crossing the street and Wham! you're laying there wondering what happened. That's when you knew John got you.
I combine that thought with my belief that Karma can be a mean mother and figure our "Friend" will get his just rewards at some point.
I have been following this thread from the beginning since I have been personally involved with his "schemes". Seems like I may have been one of the first on this board to deal with him. Back in March on 2011. I still have all the PM's from the transaction. Paid more than retail for what I received since I didn't get what was initially promised. I just chalked it up to an internet purchase and used it as an education. If anyone needs to know, I know where he lives since I picked him up and took him the Va. Fly Fishing Festival that year. LOL George
