This is a good thread. I used my first furled leader last summer after talking to Jack Hise. I really liked them for smaller flies but i was using 6x tippet . I got full extension on most casts, and a great drag free float. The only disadvantage that I encountered was ,I put a cast in a tree and had to break the tippet by pulling on it ----O my what a tangle.:)

Goddess,
No 'attack' perceived.
IMHO, all the leaders transfer energy from the line to the tippet better than furled. None of them has to be treated or cleaned every so often. All of them cast better in the wind, especially one facing you or from the side. Also, I do not have to use a knot to attach a braided leader to my fly line. Makes transition between the two perfectly smooth.

fulred leaders
Hi,
A couple thoughts:
I know anglers who prefer other leaders, most notably thier own, hand-tied. I know of one person who even mikes his material before tying up the leaders. I like the furled leaders best, but I'm more of an enthusiast than an evangelist. Different strokes. For salt, in mono, my guess would be that the advantage is in tying your own you craft what you want to your preferences. That all said, I wonder if the mention of picking up water was a furled leader or a braided (which are often hollow and absorb water). My friends who like braided, in any case, say they just false cast to the side one before casting near a fish, and that takes care of it. Hopes this helps with the riginal question.
Also, I've made a few spey leaders on a twelve foot leader board, increasing the number of threads in the butt to (I'd have to check to be sure on this) 34. But since I don't personally use them, I can't personally say how they work. My friend liked them.

I like them, & fish with them. Tried Orvis braided leaders- they threw too much spray. You really notice it when the sun is in front of you.
I mainly build 6/0 Uni thread leaders, grease them with mucillin and touch them up with some Aquel during the day. Not a lot either. I use them for nymphing too. Only I use mono there. I find they have less drag and it mends well. I use a 5' furled with up to 4' of tippet. Haven't broken off any fish either. I use a handshake setup to connect them.
Kathy Scott's DVD is worth the money. You can buy one of Xxxxxxxcrafts furled leaders, or spend about $2 more for Kathy's DVD. No brainer there. Right JC?
