A long lens compresses this scene and almost makes it look as if the heron is wading behind the fisherman when in fact the bird is on shore 30 to 40 feet away from the fisherman.

I love the Sigma lenses and get great scenes with the 10-22 Wide angle and my go to lens the 17-70 Macro with the OS. Now I am going to be tempted to the point of crazy to get myself the Sigma 150 - 500mm lens! Those are awesome shots, I keep missing those long distance shots as I need a good telephoto.

I thought long and hard before I dropped the cash for my Sigma 150-500. A friend has an older version that I played with a bit but really the older model does not compare with the new. Sigma's optic stabilization technology is fantastic and the new version of the 150-500 is very sharp. In my opinion this lens is the best long lens for the money out there. The only draw back to this lens; it needs light. With the largest aperture of f/5 this is not a low light lens at all.
