Why would you assume that DM would need to "correct himself"? Like I said early in this discussion, there are many patterns where the the black tips are desired. Just because one source recommends that they are not, does not place that trait it as gospel. :)
Interesting video. Liked how he 'cut' the excess deer hair butt stubs.

Did you like how he said you should look for the shortest possible black tips. He didn't say "No black tips is best, but if you must, choose the shortest black tips........."
At least, that's what I heard him say.

Yes! I did hear him say that. Now, do you suppose he meant that hair with short black tips are desireable or that you should find the shortest black tips because black tips are not desireable and that if at all possible you should look for hair without the black tips?
By the way, did you ever call Craig Mathews and specifically ask him that question? I did! His response was that hair absent black tips is the best and that's what he looks for when he examines deer skins, but absent that, hair with the shortest blacks tips is desireable.

I prefer whitetail deer from northern Idaho and Montana taken in October. The hair will then be short, about 1" long, with very short black tips and coarse up close to the very ends of the tips. Coastal deer from warm climates has fine hair and is seldom hollow enough to flair the right about and compress with tying thread to defeat bulk when tying small sparkle and compara duns.
That makes 3 calls I know of during this thread to Craig Mathews to get instructions on hair selection for Comparaduns? Really? So if he told you that black tips WERE desireable, would you have thrown out all of your patches without black tip? And would all of your flies tied otherwise suddenly be come tied incorrectly? Too funny.
