We were supposed to be helping?
Betty,
If the rodentia push the mothballs out of the dens, like my chipmunks do, consider pouring hot water over the mothballs to partically dissolve them. Stand clear of the funes. In fact, for a tunnel you can cover it up and still soak the mothballs. The advantage to mothballs or moth crystals is that they help to kill off the fleas, too.

I have not tried it, but what would happen if you pushed a section of garden hose down in the hole and then pour about a quart of household ammonia down it? I cannot imagine anything staying in that atmosphere. Ammonia and a squirt gun will deter very large dogs and I think it would send mice scurrying.
Betty,
How is it going? Inquirying minds want to know.

Well, let's see ... I have found the dog likes moth balls. Wet/dry ... no difference.
Mice DO NOT like mothballs. Also don't like my holding out on the food in the bird feeders.
Only one little guy left ... that I've seen. Dirt scheduled to be packed under the concrete pad tomorrow (oh, please, let that one little hanger on be out visiting friends tomorrow!!)
Almost forgot!! We DO have a toad for the toad abode!!! Dog lives to follow it, but loses it completely when it goes under the leaves. How she does that is beyond me ... it still smells like a toad, even under the leaves. Guess if she can't see it, it's not there!!
Betty, I'm glad that your toad abode (Toad Hall?) is now properly occupied by a toad that isn't even named "Ed". :)
Ed, who smells, but not like a toad
Uncle Jesse,
Betty said that she'd only have one toad named "Ed".
On the other hand, she left the "Jesse" field wide open.
