RE NYC Fishing, there's a great blog entry on the World Fishing Network's website: Top 10 Places to Catch a Fish in NYC - next time I'm in town, I may just have to bring my rod! :)

if you plan on fishing in NYC send me a PM. the WFN blog doesn't even list half of the fresh water lakes & ponds in the city. there are no MUSKIES (alive) in any city lake. I don't think the blogger has fished the 4 lakes open for fishing in Central Park. he only mentions 2 no mention of the pond at 59th street or the pool at 103rd st. all offer excellent fishing ( BG, bass, crappie, golden shiners , catfish, carp). Willow lake in Queens is closed to fishing. Snakeheads were found and remove several years ago. there are 8 lakes in Queens. 10 lakes in Staten Island. please see my blog listed above.
haven't heard any recent report but it would be news if something had happened. in brooklyn red tails are active in Prospect Park. I saw one take out a big rat once, impressive!
I used to think the same thing. There are some fly people who would treat it almost like a religious experience. There is only one right way, that sort of thing. I just want to catch fish, flies are fun because the gear is light and fun and you make most of your stuff. But I fish liver and stinky stuff for cats, and worms for 'giills or whatever. Just what the mood strikes.
Three predominant questions/statements:
1) Are there trout in this pond? Answer: I can catch ANYTHING that swims with a fly rod.
2) I've thought about trying that..Is it hard? Answer: Here, try my rod. That response usually provides a nice break watching someone enjoy themselves.
3) I can catch bigger bluegill with bait. Me: Maybe, but you may be surprised, & I'll catch more in a short time. Then I give 'em the FAOL & Warm Water Fly Fishing sites & tell 'em to check out the pictures I have posted, & I also show them some pics I have saved in my camera.

The statements I hear allot are: I have a fly rod but it is too much work, you can't catch crappie on flies, you can't bass on flies, bass won't hit a little thing like that(when I am midging for bass). Real fly fishing is only done with dry flies on a stream or a river.

"Flyfish????"
"Like The Movie?"
"....you don't look much like Brad Pitt"
and that's just what my wife says.
The fly fisherman may not always catch the largest bass, but they will usually catch the most fish, and the most total weight...
That said...... Most people want to know more about fly fishing. The other half are trying to get flyrods banned
from the club bass tournaments.
LOL LOL LOL
I am just to the point of saying that it is the way I like to fish.
On most days I catch more fish than anyoneelse at he pond.
I have given someflies to folks to use underflaots.
