It seems to me that if one does cut a DT in half you have just created 2 WF lines????
Quite true, Duckster - of a sort, anyway. So we should just all use WF's and buy flylines more often. Besides, by the time the line is worn out there will be a "new, improved, really slick advance in flyline design"!! lol Wouldn't want to miss out on that. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

"Delicacy of delivery is determined by the mass of the front part of a fly line. This is determined by line diameter (which relates directly to mass), and taper length. A line with a small diameter tip and a long taper has much less mass up front than a line with a large tip and short taper. Don't be mislead by taper length alone -- a line with a long front taper but a large tip diameter will not deliver delicately. A DT and a WF line with the same taper and tip diameter will deliver the same."
"Anytime a fly line (or any product for that matter) is designed to do one thing very well it usually has a shortcoming somewhere else. Lines that are designed to be very delicate have little mass in the front to carry larger or heavier flies, and will not handle windy conditions well."
From the article. Apparently there IS a place for L lines....big bugs and windy conditions. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
"It takes a better caster to throw the kind of loops it takes to make these lines perform their best."
This sentence confuses me in that I wonder which lines he was referring to...L or WF and DT?
Isn't it the application of basic principles that make the loop? Isn't it the loop that makes the line go, and drag out the bug? So would not applying the basics and making a loop apply to all lines, be it a length of yarn or a length of plastic over braid, or a length of plastic over lead? Once you are able to achieve a CONTROLLED loop, ALL else can be added to your cast....distance, accuracy, yata yata?

....big bugs and windy = bass bug tapers!!

"line diameter (which relates directly to mass)"
Doesn't taper deminish mass? The mass I want to pull the bug?
I do think the bass bug taper to be a good compromise between the standard taper and level, but we were even more favorably impressed when we tossed a windcutter, as far as compromisers go. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif That might be another option for those not pleased with "L" lines. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
lee s - bass bug taper, nymph taper, windcutter taper, size 7 1/2 line, etc - all same-same. These are the exceptions to the WF/DT tapers everyone has refered to thru-out this discussion. They are the lines that don't follow the rules. They are all heavier than a "standard" taper; even a "level taper". In addition they are a "taper" which aids in turning over anything. The "level taper" is not a taper. It's just a really, really cheap line. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
Donald
So are you saying that they changed the weight and tapers of the lines we were talking about to better achieve the areas of effeciency of the corresponding level lines we were talking about? The really cheap line? Hmmmm?
It IS good though that the companies DO try to target the "wants" of the consumer and produce "more user friendly" products.
I AM their "hard sell" though.....their marketing still has to convince me that I "NEED" the product. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
