rrhyne,
I overlined my 1-wt. Clear Creek rod with WF2F line. It was sort of a leap of faith, I guess, but it worked fine.
Fishing out of a canoe, I generally make short casts. Shorter compared to what a bank fisherman would throw. I overlined, then, because the extra line weight would (I theorized) load my rod more quickly for the casting I do most often. I just like feeling the rod load; it gives me the sensation that I'm more in control of the cast.
I never did team up that rod with 1-wt. line, so I can't relate whether it worked equally good being correctly matched.

Robin,
If you still feel the need for another reel. check out Overstock.com and their J.Austin Forbes magnesium, reel for ~ $75. It weighs 2.2 oz, works like a champ and seems to not even 4xist on the rod. A few years ago I put together a 2 wt. PacBay rod from Hook and Hackle. At first it seemed to wussy to use but after moving from the grass to the water, it's become a favorite with the good ole Peach, Cortland DW2F. Choice!
G'luck!

Sombody (perhaps Cortland?) should start a "Peach Club." One for all the guys who just loved those lines...
