Your story brings back an almost forgotten memory. While bait fishing for bullheads in Utah lake around 1950 I got a bite, set the hook and dragged in the head of a bullhead that somebody had cleaned and thrown into the water and yes my hook was in the fish's mouth.

PS: Also had a watersnake take a wet fly on 7 mile creek in central Utah.

Catching bats under the street lights in the summer is a favored pastime!!!
But I'd have to say that hooking...Not Catching...A Beaver was the most thrilling mishap to date..as he ended up swimming through my legs...Quite a thrilling experience...
Seen ducks and geese hooked a few times as well..Eel's and snakes seem pretty common catches in the spring of the year...

Re: unusual animals/amphibians/strange things caught on fly tack
earlier this year me and my dad were trout fishing with worms, (the stream was too narrow for fly fishing) and my dad caught a crawdad. it had pinched his worm and was holding on. it let go and fell into the water once we had it up to us though. 8)

I love it now I can tell my son he is fishing with "garden hackle" not worms.
I have caught several snakes in my time and here in NW MO they are very common and will readily take a popper of about any size or color. Have caught one bat and the best was an otter my wife hooked on a rapala down at bennett springs while we were smallie fishing in the Niangua it took us a while since he kept swimming twoards the boat but we did get him in and took him to the conservation office where they took him to a local vet to have the hooks removed from his mouth and his lip sewn back together he tore it very badly right after she hooked him trying to get the bait out of his mouth or I would have just told her to break it off then he got one of his front paws stuck on there as well it was a mess and a sight but he did calm down rather quickly when i put him in my backpack. One nice thing was he couldn't bite me no matter how bad he wanted to with a mouth full of trebles that and he was very young most likely less than three or four months old. We aptly named him Rapala... every time we go down there we look for an otter with a funny looking lip and a bad attitude.

Re: unusual animals/amphibians/strange things caught on fly tack
A muskrat once swam over my fly before I could get it away...
But the worst one was catching a loon...when they use their wings to swim underwater, that's a hell of a tug!

 I also have caught muskrats, two in fact.
Loon? is it small and light colored and it dives?
If it is, I have gotten one of those to.
