The Olympus 850SW does have a lens cover. Not sure about the more recent Olympus models, although I do believe that Olympus continued the lens cover feature with them, but you might want to check them out if that is the only issue you have with waterproof cameras.

I have a newer Stylus Tough camera and it does have a lens cap. Takes great pictures too.
what would you do?
My G10 is a Canon repair.
They want 168 bucks to repair.
It costed 500 new.
Am torn on using it as a back up and getting a brand new camera.
They will send back free without repair. It is still functional but lots of scratches on lens.
I thought my fishing camera was a goner after one of this past years' trips. It was less than 1 year old. The built-in lens cover was malfunctioning...camera would turn on briefly, but would shut off because the lens cover wouldn't open automatically.
So...I started looking around for a new fishing camera. This time I got one that was waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, cold resistant, no lens cover...sounded like a perfect fishing camera! It works really well. Pictures ALMOST as good as my previous camera. Then I sent in the old camera to see if it was under warranty. It was, and they repaired it for free and sent it back. Now I have 2 good cameras. ;o)
I don't mean to hijack Spinner's thread but I have a related question. I am looking at getting a new camera for me, using some work as an excuse. I found a 8.1 MP waterproof Polaroid with the features I know how to use (on-off switch; autofocus, etc.,). How many pixels do you need. A printer friend told me years ago 3.0 megapixels was print quality, now everything is 12 or 15 MP. I had a HP that used a 3.5 floppy with a combo of about 15X optical and digital zoom that made great photos. Do I really need more than 8 MP?
getting it fixed plus gonna buy a new one.
I threw the I need a BACK-UP camera and da wife agreed.

Possibly yes, and even maybe from a DSLR.
That sample image looks pretty good coming from a camera with a small lens. So many things affect the resolution and sharpness of your images: aperture, motion (camera or subject), sensor or negative size, lens quality and size, your viewing system, etc. The following link goes to an article that discusses sharpness and resolution issues at a not too technical level.
