Broken Rod

Sorry to hear about the broken fly rod, just remember, we have all gone through the same situation (once is one time too many)!

Now comes the part, where you call up the manufacturer, of the fly rod. They will tell you where and how to send it back to them, and the cost of replacing the broken section.

Most are fair, and equatable about broken rods, this happens all the time. Ask them to determine, if the break was a faulty rod or a fault fly angler. It may cost you a wee bit, but not as much as buying a new fly rod.

I'm just getting around to the epoxy stage on the replacement tip Gatti sent me. Even though I had help breaking it, it was my first build, so it was especially painful. I was bummed all summer after only having fished it a few times.

I hope your builder can get it back to you soon and that you find some time to fish. Chin up, it's the fishing, not the rod.

It looks like a wood grip(curly maple), and if so, does it get slippery when wet (fish slime)?

I used to snap the ends off my rods either in a car door or cabin screen door closing faster than I could get my gear & fish inside.

My fishing buddy found a broken Orvis rod in his town dump. Snapped of about 6" from the tip. He repaired it himself, forget what materials were used, but he slipped a tube over each broken end and glued it tight.

Maybe it didn't act the same but HE was sure happy to have a terrific fly rod for zero cost.

If you can't get satisfaction any other way, let me know. I would be happy to take it off your hands. It will probably work as well or better than the majority of my older rods.

As for being a crummy fly caster, well, count me in too. As long my fly gets from here to there I'm good. If it splashes, big deal.

The best fishing equipment manufacturer I know of is Eagle Claw here in Denver. Bring in ANY model from any year with any problem and they will usually fix it for FREE. Rod, reel, whatever.

Actually, the Grip and Reel Seat look to both be made of Maple Burl. Great Looking Wood! Though I would think it might get a bit slick with water and slime, but not much more than cork.

I'm guessing high-grade cork wih a Tru Oil(or comparable) finish. Beautiful rod - beautiful fish.

The handle is maple burl, as is the real seat which has a caddis fly inlay. Everyone thinks it is heavy and slippery who sees it. If I wipe or rinse my hands off it isn't slippery and it feels lighter than my St Croix Legend Ultra. I think the guy who makes them hollows them out and fills them with cork. I love it to both look at and fish with. I prefer it to cork.

When ever I get a new rod of any kind, the first thing I do is cover the cork grip with about 2-3 layers of tightl, neatly wrapped electrical tape. I hate the feel of cork.

Adam: I am old Oregonian, now Michigander. Forest Grove is beautiful small town. Where were you fishing when you broke the rod, and what time of year for windy conditions?
