I need to go out there again soon. This time I will bring some of my other rods. The point of that trip was to put fish on my new rod.
Now I am able to land those guys quickly on such rods, however I find it more pleasurable to throw weighted nymph rigs on some of my other equipment.
It was a cool partly cloudy morning with a light breeze as we made our way down into the canyon. I was looking forward to getting back on this river having not fished it since January 1st.

Before I left on this trip I received a PM from someone saying that they too were going to be on the river that day. As we made our way pas a campground we noticed his vehicle so we stopped by to say hi. The three of us BS?ed for a bit then we went our separate ways to go fish.
Shortly after Jeremy and I made it to the spot we wanted to fish. We got ready and began to fish. It was not too long before I got my first strike and set the hook. This fish was pulling like a wet towel, as it got closer I realized what it was. It was just a sucker, a 24? sucker but a sucker none the less. I quickly got the hook out and resumed fishing.

A little while later I got another strike and set the hook and the rod came to life. This fish was a pleasure to fight. When it went airborne it was apparent what species it was. I landed the fish, snapped a couple of pics and sent him on his way.

I caught some more and had a few LDRs as well. I decided to sit back for a few and watch Jeremy fish for a bit. He ended up hooking and landing a nice fish, he landed it and sent it on its way. A short time later Tom drove up, we sat and BS?ed while Jeremy finished fishing the run. The three of us decided to move to another spot.

The three of us fished the next spot for a bit. None of us really had much luck at this spot. However Tom did come close as he had a missed strike when I nice sized fish came up and tried to take his offering. After that the fish pretty much quit rising. He headed back to his vehicle to eat and I continued to fish. A little while after that I decided to meet back up with them. We all decided that we should check out some other spots.
We made it to the last spot and began to fish. I landed some more fish and had some more LDRs as well. The day was winding down and we decided to mess around a bit. Jeremy tied on this ?invented? fly (basically a multi colored looking #4 woolly bugger with rubber legs). He cast it a bit and had a few missed strikes. Then he hooked up with a nice fish. I made my way over to where he was so I could get a pic for him. As Jeremy went to net the fish it popped off and swam away.

continued due to 10 photos per post limit........
We fished for a little while longer, Jeremy ended up taking a bad fall on some slimy rocks and hurting his knee. He sat down on the bank for a bit, not too long after we left. It was not the busiest day for any of us but I know I had a ton of fun, and I got the chance to meet someone new.
Well I hope you enjoyed my report and here are some more shots from the day.

.... whitefish heaven !! and a SUCKER to top it off !!
Holy Mackerel, Sasha, you guys just got it way too good.
John
P.S. Were you serious about the whitefish going airborne ? I'm trying to remember if I ever saw that happen, and I don't think so.
Oh there were trout that came up as well yesterday. That nice one that Jeremy caught on his "special" fly was a 19" bow. There were also some smaller 15-16" ones as well, but yes it was not the most productive day for any of us as far as bows were concerned.
I was very serious about the whitefish going airborne. When it first broke the surface I thought it was a trout. Then my eyes focused in on it and I knew otherwise. I was pretty surprised as I have never had a whitey take to the air before.
Sasha, great report and pics. I've had a few whitefish go up and out on me, but it seems to be pretty rare and usually in shallower water. Glad you got out again, altough that temp. reading would have probably kept me in bed:smile:. Thanks for sharing.
Kelly.
Based on your last report you would have been fine. The temp at the top of the canyon is always a lot lower than it is in the canyon. Once we made it down there it was in the mid 20's. By ime we made it to the first spot it was 34F. In the middle of the day it warmed up to the low 40s.
Hey Sasha, the real question here has to be did you fish in that wig?! ;)
Al the best.
Mike.
