I use round toothpicks and discard when done
I have used both bodkins and toothpicks in the past. The chop stick work MUCH better for me. It picks up more varnish, and provides better control just due to the larger surface area. To be honest, it's probably easier and neater to clean up the chop stick than it is to throw away the toothpicks. Anyways, I'm a believer.
Hey psyz22: Having eaten in many restaurants and also have seen chop sticks in various shapes (round to square), which shape do you favor? I can see rounding off a square shaped stick in a pencil sharpener if that was what I was looking for. Let me know the rest of you guys too
John,
I'm sure a knitting needle would work just as well, but believe me, if I took one, my wife would know. And I'd be made to pay dearly.
Fritz,
It seems like some of the disposable chop sticks you see are pretty shoddy. The ones I found and used are fairly well made, considering. They are round to maybe slightly oval. I personally don't think you want a real sharp point. The ones I've been using taper at the end, but they are flat on the tip as opposed to pointed. Of course some other stick might work, it just the chop stick came to hand as I was thinking about how to swipe a knitting needle from my wife.
It's a definite problem when your wife happens to be a second degree black belt. You don't want to get her mad.
What I use is a tapestry needle, sometimes called a darning needle. It looks like a regular needle but the point is blunt. (rounded) rather than sharp. A package with a variety of sizes is only 3 or 4 dollars at your local Michaels or sewing store. The rounded point seems to work better for me than a sharp toothpick or bodkin. I have tried both.
Oh yes, stay away from the wife's knitting needles. Don't ask me how I know this.
Shaky,
Don't worry, the bruises will disappear in a few months. It's the physiological/emotional scars that are much longer lasting. Don't ask me how I know either.
