My nymphs are usually pretty plain (and ugly), but my suit jacket has a lot of random tinsel, beads, and flash!
Here's a suggestion: Host a plain nympth swap. All patterns have to be either one color, or one material (not counting wing cases and thread).
See what everyone comes up with.
Love the post, I went through that very thing a few years back and now I tie just a few types, PT, Hares Ear, Black Stone and Brown stone. No flash, no beads, no synthetics, no lead and except for the PT, no legs. I do use copper wire rib the Hares Ear.
My, you really do want plain! You reminded me of one of my favorites. Dub a little Australian Opossum Fur (brown colored) on a size 14-20 wet/nymph hook. Leave the guard hairs on for a really buggy look. Black thread, wrap a tapered head, whip knot and head cement. :D I know you don't need a pattern but, well....
Aussie possum fur is Awesome!:D
So many great comments to reply to - Eric, tie that fly, curl on a wing bud and you have a Possum Emerger, fantastic mayfly emerger, and one of Aussies all time greats. Still not a plain brown nymph when you do that. Mike, I use PTN and H&C all the time in NZ but still sometimes too flashy for Australian trout who are a bit choosy. Also, OK, no shorts then ya mongrel. John, good luck, but I bet you add something.
While I am at it, have you ever tied a plain GREEN nymph? I never have these either. Why? Because each time I have one in the vise I think:
Wow, so like a damsel, just a little marabou, couple of eyes burnt in... How about some shell back and its a scud or a shrimp....
Now I have tons of damsels, a ton of shrimpy things, no plain green nymphs.
And Hey BLACK ONES????? They look so great with RED ribbing, GOLD beads, brown spider legs and maybe a FLASHBACK????? Do you think I have any PLAIN BLACK NYMPHS??? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I better do that swap as suggested and scrounge everyone elses. Does anyone have any?
Sorry, I must stop listening to those voices in my head. Joe? Is that you?

I was saving this one. But you seem to be asking for it, so here it is. The color is BROWN olive.

The one I came up with this morning is a bit more complicated. It uses one material plus the thread. I think most will consider it simple, if it passes the fish-catching test as is. If it doesn't, it could get all kinds of cluttered up !!
John
It needs to be a mayfly though John. You need thread, buggy dubbing, nondescript rib and a wingcase and be able to stop at that without adding heaps of extras. The last part is the real challenge.
Gringo,
Is this what your looking for ?: http://www.flyworld.com.au/upload/pr...9-110-1083.jpg
Doug
Sort of... if only I had the discipline to tie it! Hey Doug what are you up to snooping around Aussie sites LOL!?
