I'm not sure what it was.
In the Missouri River near Sioux City, I caught a pinkish 18" fish. The body was sandy textured, not scaly. The head was triangular with the mouth on the flattened bottom. The dorsal section of the tail extended four or five inches further than the ventral section. Maybe a young sturgeon. Maybe a Martian.

My most unusual fish was a grayling. Not an unusual fish? Well, it was unusual when I caught it in Michigan's AuSable River about a dozen years ago! Fought like an old rag, though.

Regularly catch blue crabs, clams, and flounder (fluke) on the fly. The most amazing are the conch that take the fly down into their shell. No way to get in to get it out and have to "release" with the hook inside the shell.
How about a 2" killie fish?
There's some flyflingers on the NJ coast that will actually target cow-nosed rays from the beach for fun http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif They can really tear up your gear if not careful http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
