Hi Flyster! Would you want to divulge what you used to tie those midge patterns? I'd like to try 'em here in Pennsylvania. I would be ever so grateful. Midges intrigue me and I'm always looking for different patterns. Thanks[/quote]
I use thread for the body and also for the ribbing. The hook is a TMC 206BL #20. This hook is pretty small for a size #20. The thread is Ultra Thread #70 cream and ribbed with Gudebrod black 10/0. I flatten out the thread and tie the body and ribbing. Also one thing to remember, the more wraps of the cream thread the lighter the fly will be. After I tie the the body (cream) and rib (black) I tie it off and apply a very small amount Sally's nail polish giving the fly a little shine and durability. Depending on the amount of thread you use you might have to give the fly two coats. After it drys finish off the fly by adding a thorax, kryster flash or hackle. The hackle I love to use is Speckled badger, which is very hard to find in smaller sizes. Hope this helps. Feel free to get in touch for any more questions it make me feel like I know what I'm doing. Later.
flyster101, It's all about enjoyment. If you tie some flies and catch some fish you know what you're talking about. Thanks for the info. It sounds as if you are either young of age or a young fly fisherman. I'm 52 and I smile when I think back over my evolution as a fly fisherman. When you are young you want to catch as many fish as you possibly can. After you become confident you can catch a fish or two, you aim for the big, fat, long monsters. The final phase is where I am now. My biggest enjoyment comes from being out on the stream shooting the bull with my friends, and catching any fish, now matter the size. But, as the saying goes, it's all good! Have fun and sorry for ramblin'.
I enjoy being outdoors and taking in all my surroundings. It doesn't matter to me whether i catch or not.
I have been using size 20 to 24 hares ear soft hackles yes I said soft hackles. I found a north american game bird (not starling)that will tie down to a 26 or 28 but my big meaty paws make that rather hard for me. And the color of this bird id a nice med dun
carp, can you give up the secret and let us know what bird you're talking about? 8)
I'm going to have to think about it caues for one I'm having a hard time finding a steady supply. And if I told then it would only make it harder for me. And second I'm back to guiding and that secret little fly has saved my a@% many times. I feel like a real jerk not just comming out with it. I will give a small clue first. You only find this bird West of the rockies(as far as I know).
