deeky,
Am I correct in thinking that you threaded the front beads onto the hook? If so what size hook is it on? Assuming I'm using the same size beads when on the hook shank the beads compromise the gap more than I would want...that's a size 10 2x...solved it by tying the forward strung beads on top if the hook shank but that has some other issues.

I think I was wrong...on closer inspection what I thought was a wire loop looks to be a bead cross ways. deeky what did you use to thread the beads on?
How about a little walk through?

I kind of like red beads instead of floss in the Royal type patterns....wet...they have a nice glow...

mercury bead midge
Midge Man, I hope you didn't just get the clear beads for the mercury midge - it just occurred to me that the originator of that pattern felt there was something "magical" about using a bead that he described as a diamond bead - they are clear all right, but lined with a silvery color. If you got just the clear beads and don't have the luck with them that you expected, try looking for the diamonds.

I got my start with bead flies from Master Bish:

Good bead patterns are exceptionally effective, they work better than they look!

I have no idea if it makes a wit of difference but in regard to the lining of the beads as mentioned above...I pay attention to it because you can get many combinations and therefore effects ...e.g. Green...you can get it opaque...clear...clear with a lining [green, bronze, yellow, etc.]...clearish with different hues and highlites.....many possibilities....the lining thing can be nice and subtile...

Sorry it's taken so long. I got busy with work and then spent a long weekend hunting in the shadow of Bear Butte (SD).
Here's a link to the recipe.

I think it's all there, if it's clear enough. Not the fastest tie, but oh well.
Let me know if you have any questions.
