rryhne,
I had a Ross reel come with my outfit and it is a tad on the heavy side but it's not a terrible mismatch. It is a servicable reel for the one weight. I don't think that I would want to get some little toy reel about the size of a watch face. Line coils would be too tight, the line pickup rate would be to slow, and the backing capacity would be to low. The Ross also has a very smooth drag which I like. Don't go too small in your choice of reels! 8T

thanks 8T - I'll make as in depth an analysis as I can at the store. But once I get in Cabelas and start eating fudge and drooling over toys and such its hard to maintain calm, steady demeanor http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
Seriously though, those are good words of advice.

Robin, drive over to Grapevine and handle the Ultralite Fly Reel from BassPro. I don't own one, but they are small, light and feel well constructed. Last year when I was interested in getting a super-light weight reel that one was the lowest weight metal reel available in the "affordable" price range.

Take a look at the Pflueger [sp?] Supreme reel. Weight about 3 oz. H&H sells it. I think the model # is 1834. You can get extra spools for it, too. I don't think you can get spools for the BPS reel. That is what I had on my 2wt for the first year - I have an Orvis BBS II on it now & it balances well. I think the H&H reel is about $50 [their 20% internet discount applies for a "reel" http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif cost of ~$40]. My 2wt rod weighs 2 oz which I suspect is lighter than the Cabela rod. As a matter of fact, if you're interested I'll let my 1834 go for $35.

I have one of those little jewels and forgot all about it! The Pflueger Supreme that is to say.
Looks like Cabelas does not have it in the catalog so I'll need to see what they do have in stock that comes close to the weight of the Bass pro Ultralight or the supreme.

I have one of those little Supremes. It is a nice little reel for the itty bitty rods.
I could'nt got the spool tension light enough to strip line off easily. So I took a hook hone and knocked the pawls down a bit....works good now.

Sounds like you got it tweaked to your satisaction. Cool! That tweaking kinda scares me personally. But what the heck, that's what makes the world spin 'round.

Had to order the rod, seems that only a very few (four) retail stores have them in stock. But I did pick up a 0 Cahill reel on sale and had them load a 2WF Cabelas house brand line. Also ordered an Orvis 1WFF line, cheaper than the Rio line at Cabelas. I am just a tightwad at heart despite all the lectures I have been given.
Ought to be fishing with it in about a week.

RR - Plse be sure to let us know how the new rod works out!! :)

New rod arrived yesterday! I had elected to buy a two weight line, to slightly overline it. After lawncasting it with the two weight line I am glad that I did. I expect that it would take minimally the full thirty feet to start to load the rod with one weight line.
More after I actually hunt fish with it.
