I've been sharpening (lightly dressing) my scissors for many years using what was shown to me as the best method least prone to do any damage. 1. Use only a fine flat ceramic "stone", not a rounded hook sharpening stone or any type of file. 2. Stroke only the narrow shearing edge of each blade, Never the bigger surfaces that wipe across each other. 3. stroke at the same angle as the original. 4. Always stroke "away" from the cutting edge to avoid raising micro-burrs on the wiping surfaces. 5. Never try to sharpen any serrated edge. This was advice given me years ago by some toolmakers.

so if you have serrated thinning scissors you have to throw them away when they become dull, or is there a special tool to sharpen them I wonder...
