No fishing this week, but I was able to do a presentation at my local fly shop, Jimmy's All Season Angler in Idaho Falls, ID. Jimmy and his dad, Jim, always make it a great time and we had some real fun. I had made up about 30 handouts with around 17 patterns and recipes that I was going to tie and believe it or not, I was able to get through all the patterns in the 3 1/2 hours I sat at the tying table. We ran out of handouts and they printed about 20 more and all of those went also, so in all it was a great turnout of around 50 or so. A lot of flies tied, friendships made and renewed and information swapped with fellow tiers and anglers. When you can't fish, at least you can get out and associate with the flyfishing community at a similar event where you live.
Just some pics to give you a flavor of what it was like:

Great day, and a great time.
Kelly.
Kelly,
That's a great fly shop. VEE and I spent a pretty good amount of our money there when we were in Idaho Falls last year. Sounds like you had a great day.

I was reading some funny quotes in the Blue Ribbon Flies annual newsletter the other day and one is right up this alley: "I walked past the fly shop the other day, and stopped and checked my wallet. Sure enough, $20 was missing!" That's how it goes with me and Jimmy's! Love the place, but my dear wife sure wishes I'd find a cheaper hobby...
Kelly.
I watched you, but you didn't see me. I couldn't get close enough. Good crowd. I was going to ask you how you fish the Shop-vac, but had to leave before the end. As for your dear wife, tell her you're going to give up fishing and take up snowmobiling with the family. I think she'll cut you some slack.;)
Good one Lew! I did see you out of the corner of my eye, but you were headed around the corner so we didn't get to chat. Make sure you stop by when I'm tying at the East Idaho Flytying Expo in April.
The Shop Vac fly is fished dead-drift under an indicator, and usually as a second fly beneath a larger weighted nymph such as a Rubber Legs. In fact, I don't use weight on any of my nymph rigs any more. I usually start and finish the day with a weighted Rubber Legs and drop one or two smaller nymphs off of that at 18-inch intervals. Which smaller nymphs I use is determined by the fish, but I usually start with either a Shop Vac or a South Fork Special (upcoming Fly of the Week), trailed by either a Deep Purple Peril midge or a Rainbow Warrior. Last week on the Henry's Fork I only used three different dropper flies all day. Some days it doesn't matter what you use, the fish are hungry, others you can't hardly buy a hit let alone a hookup.
I have narrowed the field on what bugs I routinely use, due to experimentation, a lot of time on the water, and finding out what works and what doesn't. Nevertheless, I usually will experiment with at least a dozen new patterns each year - by myself or others I've discovered that look like they'll work - and often I'll end up adding one or two to the mix to see if they continue to produce. That being said, I still end up packed to the gills with a half-dozen fly boxes, each containing more bugs than I could fish in a year - go figure. I guess I'm one of those who always wants to be prepared. Though, truth be told, I rarely fish those strange bugs and stick with those I'm confident in, year-in and year-out.
Kelly.
Darn, Kelly, you keep mentioning that purple peril midge and whetting my appetite - maybe you could do that for a FOTW next? We're starting to think about the San Juan, and I bet they have never seen purple(HAHA).
Karen, I'll get to work on that one. I just sent off my FOTW submission for this month; the South Fork Special. I've had many requests for the Parasol Emerger which I'll be completing shortly as my next submission, and then I will make sure to get the Deep Purple Peril presentation put together shortly thereafter. Thanks for the request. Back when I last fished the San Juan, I hadn't come up with this fly, but I'm sure it would be a killer on that great tailwater.
In the meantime, here is a pic and the recipe:
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/v...rilMidge-1.jpg
Hook: DaiRiki 125 size #14
Thread: 8/0 Black
Abdomen: Black Thread
Rib: Holographic Purple Mylar ? small
Thorax: Black dubbing
Wing: 2mm white foam
I usually tie up a couple of dozen of just the abdomen portion (black thread and purple rib) and epoxy them with an emphasis on an enlarged rear portion of the abdomen (see photo) much like the naturals.
Hope this helps.
Kelly.
Wow, Kelly - you da man! I will get the purple holo - I have never heard of the rear portion being enlarged - or the foam going lengthwise( I bet that is just the image), but I'll try anything, even some parasol midges. Thanks so much for the posting.
hey kelly
i have your video of you tying at jimmy's give me a call.
