I like this Tim Murphy fellow...well said!
In a defense of the Whitlocks, I must add they did lead a successful fight in one respect in saving Crooked Creek, a trib of the White and one of the premier smallmouth streams in the South from at least an injunction against further gravel mining. And Maddog your leadership in the Friends of the Little Red is very admirable. I think it takes a collective grassroots effort to save these streams.

Its strange how the post took on the direction it did. I saw nothing wrong with using the "bad" word, it shows emotion. If his post was littered with profanity, sure he would lose respect, but it was well written. I think it is good to questions those who have the public eye, especially if they make money off of it. Rarely do the people who make the difference get the spotlight, such as madddog who is working personally on the problem, or the others who try to clean up/do something everyday. Those who are in the spotlight are expected to work, because with their popularity they can gain support, and help with the effort, calling them out is the American thing to do. Good luck, I would someday like to fish down there, hopefully it will still me there.

A bum-legged old man and a drunk. That's all you got?
That's WHAT I got.
It's not what you say but more of How you say it that has gotton Mr. Fox Statler no wheres in this area.
Unfortunaly Fox usually resorts to some sort of name calling or allows himself to get way to emotional and say some unfortunate things about others in this area.
A book comes to mind. "How to win friends and influence people" Dale Carnigie..
Apparantly Fox has never read this book or if he has has not bothered to put any of ideas to use as it is a tried and tested way of doing business.
A predicament exist for me now.
Fox has pointed out the problems of these rivers. yes there are problems. Fox really cares about the rivers. I've heard folks up and down the White River use Fox's name and Quote him. Folks who've been to his seminars, Fly tieing classes and folks he has guided. Iv'e argued with Fox on another board (of which I am a moderator) over the issues. Never has Fox been Black Balled, Deleted, Edited or otherwise manipulated electronically on this board. His positions and especially the methods he uses have greatly been questioned by many of the members of that board. It is unfortunate that Fox chooses methods and an attitude that seems to turn folks around these parts off. Name calling and inuendos are definatly not the grease needed to solve problems. Being a gentleman and stating your case with facts and figures are.
It's unfortunate that Fox has managed to alienate a lot of his supporters with tactics and strategies that leave them between a rock and a hard place. (see some post above) A more diplomatic, patient, persistant concilitary stance in conjunction with the current problems would have gone much further in helping to solve our problems. Fox has some great things to say about our rivers. Unfortunatly now he has nothing good to say about anyone, or the rivers. Using tactis, language, strategies and politics from the 60's is backfiring on this once highly respictable individual.
Here is the really sad part:
Fox sees things a lot of folks miss. A lot of folks have missed what he sees. Fox is right about a lot of what he sees. Fox has been a leader in the area of entomology, fishing Techniques, Tieing, strategies and a whole lot more. I respect him and give him credit for his accomlishments as he greatly deserves them. I stand on his shoulders as a guide as do many others who have benefited from his knowledge and experience. I've met Fox a few times on the white river when I was getting started. He is a HERO to me and many others who guide and fish the rivers. He has has garnered much credence over the years amongst those of us who spend a lot of time on the water.
But I say now that the leadership he is offering to the community is being slapped down by language and attitude that is unbecoming of a man of such stature.
Respectfully

As July 4th approaches we need to remember or read about why we fought for independance. Fox wears his heart on his sleeve. He doesn't hide anything and this makes him a very big asset. I have always been a little leary of people that tap dance around words for the sake of being p.c. Seems to be a bit of the pot calling the kettle black here. You cannot, like it or not, deny the fact that Fox has pointed out the problem with the mentioned water shed. So lets join together and fix it. I salute J.C. and L.F. for not censoring.

Your attitude determines your altitude!
Jimmy T- unfortunately you have bought into the 'politically correct' crap. Yes, what Fox says is TRUE but gee, couldn't he have said it in a nicer way? Have you noticed that someone who robs you is still called a thief? Maybe we should call them morally challenged individuals?
What is happening there on the White and Norfolks is nothing short of criminal. Hurrah for the folks who are working to clean up the Red River and Crooked Creek. Why aren't they in the forefront of getting the White cleaned up? Too much money behind the polution? He who has the gold rules?
This is America - you don't have to allow this to happen. I am NOT going to drop this.
If I have to use name calling, like polluters, crooks, filth promoters, and any more I can think of I will. The people causing the problems are raping the river.
They are stealing from everyone downstream...
and since this is 'public water' from each and everyone of us.
This isn't reality tv - it is REAL. Maybe some are just so numb they don't get it. It is wrong!

Having seen Fox's manefesto emailed to literally hundreds of people I thought was completely irresponsible. Seeing it in reprint on a well respected website is suprising. Having it supported as "fact" leaves me in awe. Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press can often border on propaganda.
The fact is, that Fox's views are almost completely "opposite" those of the trout biologists with Arkansas Game and Fish. He has opposed almost every effort that they have proposed for water quality and habitat.
I have personally not taken a stance because I don't know the "facts". Nor am I qualified in any way to hold myself as an authority on the matter. I and others here in Arkansas do however attempt to stay informed. That is not always easy with the retoric flying in both directions. Amazing how much confusion one dissenting voice can cause. Thank goodness.....
The White and Norfork rivers have recently been listed as "impared" waters to "study" the causes of low oxygen. The biologists hold that it is a natural function of an empounded body of water but can be remedied with forebay oxygen infusion. Also they hold that it is "not" a drainage issue of pollutants.
No one is asleep at the switch here but it will take time to sort out all the possibilities. Those include natural causes. The fact that it's hot outside just might be because it's summer and not global warming or other such sensationalism.
By the same token when nature takes a turn it does it all at once. With that in mind it's important to keep a bright light on the issue of water quality. For that, at least, I'm glad Fox is keeping people on their toes.

John,
This is not a NEW problem. The problem has been created over years, not weeks of warm weather. You might want to read part 1 and part 2, beginning here from articles in the Ozark Anglers section of FAOL: [url=http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/ozark/ozark101104.html:49619]http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/ozark/ozark101104.html[/url:49619]
