I've never seen Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster or a woman fly fishing. I've heard reputable reports of all three, though.
I'd say 5%, tops. Depressing news for us single guys!

We have the pleasure of fishing with 6 different ladies. None is our bride....dang! One is quite an accomplished caster and another is quite an accomplished and varied FF'er. We see VERY few other gals out there.
I have to agree with LF's #'s for sure. Might be that a few more belong to clubs, but some may not be active fishers.
Here's our albie crew on the way out this past w/e.

I KNOW we're gonna be in trouble for THAT! http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
The albies were a "no show" yet, so we opted to mooch salmon and rockfish. Which produced enough for entertainment and several FINE meals. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

I would say 5% or less.
We only have one woman in or TU
chapter of about 100 men.
She comes with her husband.
Although, we have had a fair number
of women take our TU Chapter Fly
Fishing School. There is usually
about 5 in the class of 30.
We have only had 1 woman take the
Fly Tie class, the one mentioned
above.
In my 4 years in this sport, I believe
I have only seen 2 women fly fishing.

I fish in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina and my expierence is that less than 1% of fly fishers I have seen on the water are female.

LF,
I've seen barry & Cathy Beck give a rod waving lesson once,But thats as close as I've ever seen to a woman in the act of Flyfishing, and yes what I saw can only be discribed as "Rod Waving" . No fourm of casting in Flyfishing that I've ever encountered has made me make a constant fig. 8 in the air with my line!!!!....

"I've often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before" A.K.Best
"Wish ya great fishing"

Here in the North Island of New Zealand I would say Ladyfisher is being a bit generous with eight percent I think somewhere between three to five percent would be nearer the mark.
I do on occasions fish with four delightful ladies and they are all good fishers. They often out fish me and my male buddies and give us a good ribbing about it. They agree that we need more women fishers but, reckon we dont see more women fly fishing because the wives are only too happy for hubby to go fishing as it gets the men out from under their feet.
In the case of my Little Lady. They are right on the money. "G" Jax

I'm a much better Fly fisher when talking fishing, than when I'm Actually Fly fishing!
LF,
I've only seen two women flyfishers in my 40 or so years of flyfishing. Your one of them and my wife is the other. Based on that, I think your numbers might be a bit high as well.
Ooops, make that three. I forgot about Kim, who VEE introduced to our fine sport at the CWFI.

I seem to be an anomaly around here. I've seen very few women flyfishing, and the guys seem to find it novel to see me on the streams. Many of the guys say they'd like to have their wives (S.O., or girlfriend) join them fishing, but I wonder if they've ever asked.

Trouts don't live in ugly places
LadyFisher,
I spent most of my adult years teaching, guiding and running shops and I'd like to think that California is about as open minded and gender neutral a place as exists on this planet.
I'd being willing to bet that your demographics are pretty close to right on ( for CA ), or maybe just a little bit on the high side ( nationwide ) .
Best, Dave
25% is close to right.... The problem is in what your definition of a fly fisher is. that figure counts every lady that ever picked up a fly rod and tryed it, even if only once. They will answer the question, do you fly fish YES. My daughter fly fishes but has not in 2 years and then only twice. But most fly fishers men included do not fish 10 days a year.
