Here's my favortie gill fly, the heretic. damned hard to beat under an indicator or a popper. I have caught bass up to 4 pounds on it also....

Ok hugefish-80..... You have got to share the pattern for that one, if possible! Marabou tail, chenille body? What size hook?
Some great ideas here guys! Keep 'em coming!

Hi Zac,
Hope things are going well with you. I remembered another fly I like a lot and use a lot. The maribou damsely fly nymph has given considerable success. I tie it in olive, again on #10 and #12 Mustad 9672s.
Regards,
Gandolf
Pic? You want a pic? How about a step-by-step from the late Al Campbell?

I deeply regret having never gotten to meet Al. His work has helped, and continues to help, many people in our sport.

I'll see if my friend can take some pics and i'll try to post a step by step
Holy Smoke! Three pages! I must be doing something wrong. (Just kidding folks, calm down) I use poppers, gurgle pops and whatever large meaty looking nymphs and spiders that I have left over from my other boxes. I used to use black gnats a lot but found they swallowed the things quite a bit. Truth be told, I do 99.9 % of my bluegill fishing on top because that's what I like to do.
this is the only fly i've used for sunfish and that was in idaho. caught crappie, bluegill and large mouth bass. especially effective when they're on spawning beds.
material and instruction at my web page.
My hands down favorite (as everyone who has fished with me knows) is a woolly worm. Unweighted, size 12 preferred, yellow chenille with grizzly hackle & red wool tail. Many patterns will show just a little stub of red but I extend the tail 1/4" or so & it serves me well for some very nice gills.
That being said, I also like red butt epoxy ants, yellow gurglers, white foam spiders, & foam beetles. I know it's just a personal hang-up, but I prefer unweighted flies for gills...even when fishing sub surface. I like that slow, natural drop & I think it's why that woolly worm is so effective. It's very effective on the drop.

Tied up some Goldie Jr's and boa yarn leeches tonight! They're gonna be some fish-catchers. It's the first time I've tried the Goldie Jr. Turned out pretty well! The next few evenings will have some marabou damsels and gurglers in the works. Can it just be mid-April already??
