Use the vest at times. Other times it is a fanny pack and boxes that have their own lanyard.
Many times it depends on the distance to the pond.

I have two vests, one mesh, the other cloth. I switch them out according to the season. BUT - (you knew that was coming, didn't you) I carry ALL my gear in a large backpack. When I get to where I am going to fish I load my vest pockets with what I think I will need out of the backpack. The backpack and one of the vests along with a 3wt and a 5wt live in the back of my Jeep Liberty (small 4X4 SUV) so I can stop if I see a likely piece of water even if I am not out on a fishing trip.
Dont know why this didnt post originally --anyway. I have a hard time not using my vest. ive been trying alternatives for years but generally still reach for the old faithful.the thing that drives me nuts is Im not someone who is changing flies all the time .
When Im fishing small streams and not too far from the car,Ive been using a Goertzen lanyard and a fanny pack that a guy from a bamboo site makes. If I know the stream and can narrow it down to one box, i just use the Goertzen.
Best,
Steve
I have gone through vests, lanyards, hip packs, chestpacks, & finally settled on 2 Simms Sling Packs. I carry 1 for flyfishing & 1 when I occasionally plug fish for bass. I can wear them in front or sling 'em around to my back so they're out of my way. Tools are attached via Gear Keeper zingers so they aren't getting in my way. Works super for me.
