Here fishy,
I'm confused. Are you saying that good offset rotary vises don't keep the axis of the hook shank in constant alignment? Mine do. You can adjust the vise for the size of hook until they are perfect.
I must have misunderstood what you are saying?

Just saying I could never get my Renzetti to rotate in constant alignment, but the Danvise did. Never understood what difference the size of hook made. If you hold your finger on the place where you would put the hook, it moves up and down as the jaws rotate.

The head of the vise has to be adjusted, depending on the size of the hook, to set the jaws so that the horizontal axis of the hook shank stays in line during rotation. Otherwise, if you try to rotate ANY offset rotary vise set for a size 18 hook with say a size 8 hook, there will be "wobble".
I think all Renzetti's, even the Traveler, have a adjustable jaw head so that the hook shank will stay in line. I know the Renzetti vises I had would do so.......as well as my other offset rotary vises.

Sure wish you were here to show me what you mean.

Not the best, but a decent video of a Renzetti keeping the shank of the hook in a near-constant plane while the vise is rotated. This tier didn't have his hook set quite correctly in the jaws, so there is miner wobbling.
Let me know if this helps the explanation.

Actually, I thought of looking at youtube all by myself, and finally figured out what I had been missing, but thanks.

Here is a better video showing and explaining the head adjustment for a Renzetti:

Now I am going to have to look at my Renzetti Traveler when I get home.
I can honestly say that I've never messed with the head adjustment of mine and have tied on hooks from size #4 down to size #24.
I've probably owned this vice over 10 years.
You learn something new everyday!!!

Probably the least expensive straight rotary would be to make a Danvise straight jawed, easy to do and all you need is a couple o-rings to do it. I think there are step by step directions online somewhere.
That said the Renzetti Clouser is a good straight jaw vice.

I believe PEAK has just come out with one recently.
