Bob,
I just came back from WalMart where I picked up a pack of "DRITZ Homecraft Needles", 7 count has 5 straight and 2 curved needles. In terms of thickness, the 2 large needles are too large and the next largest is too small. Have to take them back. So I'll be looking at some more needles and will hopefully find one that works.
Hey, I hope this is okay. If not, Moderator let me know and I'll delete it. Here's an article that describes needles for tube flies:

Allan,
I've seen that tube fly website already. Probably end up ordering the felting needles from Walmart. I'll just wait a week. They have free shipping to the local store.
Thanks.

Went back to Hobby Lobby and searched for felting needles on my own. Found them, but don't buy them! I had a sales lady help me open the package and tried both 36 GA. and 40 GA. of the Artiste brand. I brought a Q-Tip tube along - it spun all the way to the bent end on both.
Also looked for spokes at Walmart - none there. The only bicycle shop in Paris closed years ago.
This is getting to be a bigger problem than I thought.

All spokes are not created equal.
The top one is fine ...the second too large.
Note the tubes that fit are jammed against a taper in the end of the spokes to prevent spinning.
The bottom one is on a skewer from a set I got at $1 store.
The second picture shows the very end of the tube held by the vise which nicely prevents spinning...if the tube is deformed just trim it.

Good solution, ducksterman! Get a tube long enough; pinch it in the vise; and trim it when finished.
Thanks.

Hobby Lobby had their Clover brand of felting needles in the reduced items area of the yarn section. The 5-packs of both heavy and light weight are $3.05, reduced from $8.49. I bought the heavy weight - pretty tight fit. I'm still going to pinch the tube end in the vise.
The 100% wool roving was also reduced. Two color $!.99 packages were $0.71. Should make good dubbing for wet flies.

If we don't get more players at june 15th is it maybe an idea that each contestant ties four times three different tubes? Just letting up a balloon!
When tying a tube I always prevent it from slipping by putting a finger on the tube when tightening the thread. It just needs some getting used to.

This is my first time tying Tubes and I've been experimenting. Just to place a fly name next to my own on the list so you know what I'm tying, here it is. I'm tying a variety of 'Popsicles'. Since I'm learning as I'm going, you'll probably get more then 1 apiece. I do have a question that you guys may be able to answer: I've viewed some videos where the tier places a tiny disc at the front of the tube and then creates a collar by carefully placing a flame near the end of the tube. Could 'round sequins' be used for that disc? How about some types of beads? Suggestions?
Thanks

I'll defer to the experts on the sequene question. I'm new at tubes too. Sjo, let's each tie eight flies and I'll split them up accordingly. We may get some duplicates but as many as I lose duplicates are not an issue?
We can make the final call on the 15th, Allan, Bob where do you stand?

Hi Bill,
I'm getting along and can get my 8 flies ready by the 15th of this month (June) if you want. Otherwise, I'll have time for some additional practice and have the flies ready and mailed between then and the end of this month. Which do you prefer? Just say the word.
