for me, no comparison... TMC...
I love the 3906 and 3906B hooks both. I like the 3366 a whole lot, and use it too. I am not sure if I have 3399 hooks. You use them for wet flies? I tried to find it on a comparison chart, but did not see it. I did see it is now a S60 signature hook. What do you use the 3399 hook for mainly?
Somehow I knew you would say that ....
Ok, I want to see one of your 9300s and compare it to my hooks. Just by looks. This can get so confusing. This is why I want to minimize the hook inventory to standards as much as possible. I do have 50 hooks I bought of TMC 3761. I have smaller packs of TMC too...trying to organize all these hooks...whew...what a job. I didn't realize I had so many different ones until I started putting them in organizers...my goodness.
The 3399 is just about the same hook as the 3906. The major difference is in the eye. The 3906 has a tapered eye. The 3399 has a ring eye. Some say there are other differences, but this is the major one. The 3399 is preferred for tying traditional wets for show. It gives a more balanced and symmetrical head.
Fish don't care one way or the other. :)
I just re-read your post. Maybe I should try the 3399. I cannot remember if I have these or not. If it is better for old patterns, I certainly want to try it. To top this off I have bought a bunch of Dai-Riki hooks, and I plan to try to figure out how they all compare too. I wanted a Dai-Riki 300C. It was talked about in the Dave Hughes book. But all I could find was a 300 hook. So I ordered some to try out. The 300C is comparable to the 94840 hook. He used these for light wire hooks. The 9300 was for a stout wire hook. I plan to tie a bunch more wet flies, soft hackles and such...so I am trying to get the hooks he talked about. The TMC 9300 was comparable to the Mustad 3906. This can drive you crazy after a while sorting through all the NUMBERS. (or at least ME)
Well that settles it. If I don't have them on hand, I will have to order some. The 3906 is a slightly heavier hook. But the ring eye might be a benefit. I still have not got all these hooks organized just yet. This is really helpful folks, I really appreciate the time on this. I have been tying for a little over a year and a half, and I am trying to improve my tying, without buying more stuff than I need. But if it is a hook I think is a must have, I will at least try it out. You sold me on this one. :)
Hi,
I've used 3399, 3399A, 3906 and 3906B. There are some slight differences. The 3399 and 3399A are "standard wire" while the 3906 and 3906 B are heavy wire. As said the 3906B is longer than the 3906, and likewise, the 3399A is just tad longer than the 3399. The standard 3399 and 3399A have longer barbs, but if you bend them down, they are fine. The newer line of these hooks, the barbs are shorter. All these hooks are classic "sproat" bend. A good substitute for 3399A is the Daiichi 1550. For 3906 Daiichi 1530

Thank you Mark, I made more notes. I was just looking at the chart I got from Kevin. It shows a Dai-Riki 70 hook is comparable to the 3906 also.
