I think you are right.
Being set up to make fibers and other synthetics such as mylar is so very expensive that I don't think any supplier could possibly afford to do it, based on potential returns from the fly tying sales.
For that reason we know they all buy commercially available stuff, carpet yarn, etc., and make it into dubbing and other products. They may be able to cut mylar into thin strips or twist it for certain products, but that's about it.
So if one outfit can buy the material and make it into fly tying material, so can others. That means no company can really have much of a monopoly on any material.
The price of the stuff may vary, from brand to brand, a lot in the fly shop, but the costs of the materials is a small part of the cost to the seller in almost every case I wiould guess.
I think it is just like womens cosmetics. The marketing and packaging of the products are the real difference, not the products.
