I remember watching a fly fishing show on TV and they pronounced it: ker on o mid i. Whether that is right or wrong, I'm not sure. I'll leave it to someone else to decide the correct way to pronounce it.

One of my favorite books is Mayflies by Makcolm Knopp and Robert Cormier.
In the back section Appendix Five it gives the The Phonetics of Latinized Mayfly Species names, it is the neatest way to understand the pronunciation of these cool little under water critters.
A few examples:
Tricorythodes - try-core-ee-thode-ease
Ephemerella - ef-fem-er-ella
dorothea- door-uth-ee-uh
Heptageniidae- hep-tug-gene-uh-day
Paraleptophlebia - para-lept-oh-fleebee-uh
I don't agree with the posts above on the found pronunciation of Chironomidae as I remember from a CD I have on aquatics.
I will need to review it to be sure but, as I recall is is pronounced as it is looks Cry-o-nome-ee-day
However, please don't hold me to this :)
I love this stuff! :D
I agree with Steve in the post above...
I ain't argyin' wid any of y'all! I've been pronouncing it kro no mid in my mind when I read it. Thank goodness I ain't said it out loud!:D

It's fun to ask a question that I see many people besides me have as well they just don't like to admit it. :p
Steve, I'm still interested in how the book breaks it down, when you get a chance, but I am close to going "Normad" and calling them midges and just moving forward. If anything, this thread has shown that most of us, recognize the word, but not very many of us say it the same.
The problem lies in the different pronunciations/accented syllables of the Family name and the short-hand/slang version of the family name.
All Families in the Animal Kingdom end in idae. E.g. Ursidae, Salmonidae, etc. It is always pronounced ... i day For the Family name Chironomidae ...
The entomologists I've heard say it all pronounce it Kyro nom i day with the accent on the 1st and 3rd syllables. The accented syllables shown in upper case would be as follows. KYro NOM i day They might say KYro NOM ids when referring to the midges that are classified in that Family.
The fisherman/fly tiers and most (but not all) of the fish biologists that I know or have worked with say Ku RON o mids with the accent on the 2nd syllable. ... or as someone said ... midges.
These are differences that I hear a lot.
Gosh, I think we all speak Latin with an accent !
I like Skylar's method.
See looks at my fly box, gets a funny little frown, looks up with her huge blue eyes and sez, "BUGS! Bugs, Grandpa!"
At least I'm sure I have her fooled. (She's 3)
I kinda dought fish know the scientific names for the food they attack, or pass on. ;)
The rest is just so much more human B.S.
gets MY vote!

So far some have been close, but not quite (although I may have missed one):
Its "Ky row naw mi day". Trust me on this. I sort of do biology for a living. The click on the speaker thing was hilariously off.
